中国関連の本の中では、ここ数年の間の最高傑作に入ると思う。
ノンフィクションながら、小説を超える面白さで、目からうろこの連続でした。できれば、上下二巻もので読みたかったと思うほど興味が尽きない良書でした。

主役は、あの映画「西太后」「芙蓉鎮」に主演した世界的大女優・劉暁慶です。その劉暁慶の日本では全く知られていない半生を描くことで、建国から文化大革命、改革開放へと突き進んできた激動の現代中国の姿を生き生きと描き出しています。

貧困と混乱の中で生死の境をさまよい、文化大革命では過酷な農場生活を強いられる。そして這い上がった劉暁慶は、世界的な大スターとなり、改革開放の最先端を疾駆して女性億万長者となるのですが、中国共産党が巨大な壁となって劉暁慶の前に立ちふさがることになる…。

劉暁慶の激烈な半生は、まさに現代中国の縮図であり、この本は、ものの見事にその両方を描ききっています。
時間も忘れて、劉暁慶の物語を読み進むうちに、知らず知らずに、現代中国と中国国民の本質が理解できてきます。

「現代の西太后、絶体絶命」「文化大革命、改革開放の衝撃の真実」「対中ビジネスに成功する方法」…いろいろな人がいろいろな読み方をして楽しめる本だと思います。

中国映画界で今をときめくチャン・イモウ監督や鞏俐、姜文、アメリカで活躍しているジョアン・チェンらのエピソードも盛り込まれており、中国映画ファンにはもちろん、対中ビジネスなどのかかわっているビジネスマンなどにも是非、お勧めの一冊です。

専門家の書いた堅苦しい本や単なるハウツウ本などが多い中で、現代中国を知る上では、欠かせない良書の登場だと思いました。

本書は、まぎれもない上質のノンフィクションである。劉暁慶という人物を通して、日本人にはなかなか理解できない建国以来の現代中国の実相を、余すところなく描いている。全編を通じて、日本には知られていないエピソードの連続で、まさに映画を観るように鮮明に現代中国の激動の５０年が蘇ってくる。文化大革命、改革開放…なるほど、これが中国であり中国国民か、と良く分かる。文章も歯切れが良く、日本のノンフィクションに新風を吹き込む力作である。書店に氾濫している中国本では、物足りないと感じている読者には格好の書である。政治家から企業経営者、ビジネスマン、学生、主婦といったあらゆる人々にお勧めである。
