新宗教の内部に入って、その教義や儀式を目の当たりにしながら、頭と体をフル回転して書き上げたルポ。いま、だれも泥臭くて面倒な“現場”を嫌がる中で、50代の著者が新宗教の教団に飛び込むのです。そのスリル。怖いもの見たさだけでも十分読めてしまいますが、単なる興味本位の読み物にしていないのはこの著者だからでしょう。ひとつひとつの教義まで踏み込み、読者に分かりやすく解説しながら、一方でその教団やひいては、日本の社会がはらむ病巣を浮き彫りにしてゆきます。あとがきを読むと、この作品がとにもかくにも１冊にまとまった幸運を感じずにはいられません。

日本の中にたくさんの聖地があり、それぞれ意味があることを初めてした。その上、日本には山岳信仰の聖なる山があり、各種ご利益のある神社があり・・・。
宗教に興味がない人にも読みやすく、くどい説明はない。が、かえって印象には残る一冊。1990年から1995年の間に掲載された記述だが内容に古さは感じさせない。

この著者は，全ての先入観の基となる情報を持った上で，
先入観のない素直な視線で日本の「ばちかん」をめぐる。

宗教の本というよりも，旅の本です。

日本にはこんなにも沢山の聖地？が存在していた！
それぞれが一個の宇宙をもち、その内的懐は限りなく大きい。
これが私たちのすぐ隣に存在する世界。
