ホラー小説である。憎しみという感情が、人のなかで人知れず育ち、本人をふくむ人びとを傷つけ破壊するモンスターとして書かれているのである。そいつが、自分や家族や友人の、たとえば口の片隅や皮膚の表面からからもモレ出ているのではないかと心配になって、とても怖くなってくる。
血のつながった家族への得体の知れない嫌悪感と、親密であるはずの男女間の、親密であるがゆえのトラブル。あいつの発生源はまずはそこら辺にもとめられるだろう。愛とプライドの調整ゲーム的な後者はけっこうわかりやすいので、ややこしいのは前者。一緒に暮らしている自分と似た人に、ときどきものすごくイライラした気持ちをさせられるのはなんでなのだろうか？理屈では説明できなさそうなので、とりあえず角田さんの丁寧な小説を読んで反省してみるわけである。夢中で読んでいるうちに、余計わからなくなったりするのだが。小説のおもしろさ加減と反比例するかのように。
さらに、あの怪物の正体を解明するためには、あいつの栄養となるものについても、気をつけておかなくてはならない。連中の血となり肉となる不気味なエネルギー、すなわち「ふつうの人々」の悪意のない悪意のかたまりである。十代の同級生グループたちが向けてくる思わせぶりな視線や、バイト先の同僚たちのうわさ話などからモレ出てくる、自覚されていないありきたりの悪意。それと微妙な距離をとることで最も強烈な力を発揮するその黒く重い邪気のかたまりは、それを吸い込んでしまう敏感さをそなえている（不幸にも？）人たちを苦悩させ、彼らのなかの怪物を肥え太らせていく。たぶんこれまで何度も観察し感じ取ってきたのであろうそのプロセスを、著者はたんたんと描いて行く。
ああ、怖かった。

日常生活の中で渦巻く不満が憎しみに変わる
その憎しみだけが集約された
登場人物たちのあまりにも身近な人たち
もしくはあまりにも昔に関わった人たち
執拗な感情に気が滅入った
言いかえれば、角田さんの筆力の旨さなのだが・・
娘をそのままで愛せない醒めた母の目線とか
夫婦の小さな溝とか
小学校の担任への憎しみとか・・・
哀しくなる感情が、７作品とも気持ちを滅入らせる

　題名にひかれて、「何だか心温まる読後感の良い読み物」を期待して手に取ってしまったので、反動が大きかった。この作者の作品を読むのは初めてだったので、先入観を持たずに読もうと思って臨んだのが、間違いだったと後悔したくらいだ。
　読み進むうちに、こういうことを誰もが感じるのかもしれないけれど、殊更取り上げる必要があるのだろうかとうんざりしてきてしまった。正直、悪趣味な理性、偏執的な知性、屈折した女性性、思い出に焼きごてを押すような、嫌な臭いのする作品集だった。人の脳裏に隠れ潜んでいる隙間を、落とし穴にまで広げてしまうような感性の鋭さが、人も自分も切り刻んでいくという作風を持つ人だとは、知らなかった。
　私にとっては「羊頭狗肉」の本だったが、ファンにとってはどうなのだろうか…。
