帯のない状態で手に取り、ちょっと変わったところのある、
理科系の頭脳を持つ生活者の小説だと思って読んでいた。でも違った。
「西の魔女が死んだ」もそうだったけど、不可思議なことを含む世界の小説なのだった。
ファンタジーの系譜。

代々伝わるぬか床を託され世話することになった上淵久美。
しかし、そのぬか床からは人が生じてくるのだった。
酵母の研究者である「男の性も女の性も選ばない」風野さん。
ぬか床を先祖の土地に返すため、彼と島に渡り、
延々と続く、そして画期的な飛躍も含む大きな生命の営みに触れる‥‥。
挿入される、細胞の内部そのものの中での新たな生殖活動の飛翔の物語。

読んでいて、自分の言葉に翻訳できない（知識がない）もどかしさは感じるものの、
土着的な不思議さを発酵レベルで語りきってあり、
世界を見る目をもうひとつ増やしてくれる小説である。

　うめく「ぬか床」から始まり、生命の物語までもっていく壮大な流れが心地よい。いくつものエピソードが重層的に絡み合い、この中のどの材料を使っても小説が一本書けそうだ。
　たとえば「ぬか床」に始まる怪異は内田百のような日常の傍にある奇譚として、曾祖父母へさかのぼる親族の縁は『からくりからくさ』のような「血」の物語として、菌を中心にした遺伝子の話は瀬名秀明のような理科系ホラーとして。
　しかしすべては惜しげもなく一つの物語に編みこまれ、語られる。この物語の強さ、梨木さんの「語り部」としてのものすごさを感じる。この人の見るもの感じるものの豊かさ。同時代に生まれてよかったと思う。
　また、『ぐるりのこと』で提示されていた様々な問題に対する、現時点での解答がこの小説に結晶している。

「ファンタジーなの？児童小説なの？」ってタイトルですが、どう見ても子供向けではありません。むしろ現代小説っぽい雰囲気。ただし大半の女性作家と違い、梨木さんの作品は全体的に恋愛要素が薄いです。

冒頭で独身だった叔母が急死し、主人公の女性はとある遺品「ぬか床」を引き継ぎます。
ぬか床が悲鳴を上げたり、ぬか床から卵が出てきたり、ぬか床から幽霊みたいなのが出てきたりと、とにかく摩訶不思議な事ばかりが起こります。荒唐無稽な話なのに、書き手と登場人物と人間関係が至って現実的なので、不思議と地に足が着いた感覚のまま読み進められます。

がっつくように読む感じではないですが、梨木さんの持ち味でもある（と思う）嫌味のない文章のせいか、読んでいると心が穏やかになれます。
