このところ絵本づいていた梨木香歩の久々の小説です。

定職を持たずにのんびりと季節の中で時間を送る主人公と
彼岸から訪れる行方不明になった親友のさりげないやりとりが秀逸です。

坂田靖子の「村野」などの短篇や、今市子の「百鬼夜行抄」などを彷彿させる
優しい物の怪たちと時間におきざりにされたような男たちの関わりが心に残ります。

ひとつひとつの章の終わりが、静かに後を引く読後感で
ページが終わるのを残念に思いながら、ゆっくりと読みたい本です。

表題だけ見て、藤原家守とかいう名前の平安貴族の話かな？ぐらいのつもりで読み始めた。
まさか家守＝家の管理人だとは。

何か懐かしさのある、不思議な掌編連作集だが、私の知る限り、「あの本に似ている」というところのない、極めて独創的な作品である。

旧家の庭の植物や、床の間の掛け軸の鳥との「交流」。河童も出れば、鬼も出る。
とにかく突然出る、前触れも必然もない。まるで居て当たり前という描き方である。

作者は、そういう「異界のもの」とも共存していた、少し前の日本の風情を描いている。懐かしさは、そこから来るのだろう。

加えて、全く無駄のない見事な文章にも感服する。「静物」の描写には、この作者の、文体・文章力は、まことによく合う。
梨木香歩ファンならずとも、体験してみる価値はある作品だと思う。

この作品は日本がどれだけ美しい国であったかを示す記録であり、また日本が美しさを取り戻すための指南書でもある。
まだあらゆる情報が人づてと書物で成り立っていたいた時代に、なんだか足早に文明を吸収していこうという日本。そんな流れに何となく足踏みしている物書き綿貫氏と四季折々の生命との交歓が鮮やかに描かれている。
亡き友人の家に家守として入居した氏は、草木を愛で、愛ですぎて百日紅に懸想され、近所のおばちゃんと話し、自分の手にしているのが河童の衣だと知ったり、犬と連れだって散歩に出て、あらゆる魂魄を背負い込んで苦しんでる尼僧姿の狸を助けたり、小鬼のふきのとう摘みを手伝ったり、床の間の掛け軸から前触れなしに現れる亡友にからかわれたり…と、とにかく日々盛りだくさんの珍事を経験する。でも決して慌てず、騒がず、その出来事を美しい日本語で綴る。鮮やかな色彩をもって綴る。
なんと心洗われる事か…こんなに豊かな記録を私は他にしらない。異界との扉が少しだけ開いていた時代の日本は、こんなにも、エキセントリックだったのだ。
