世界的な免疫学者である多田富雄氏が持論である超（スーパー）システムについて展開を試みています。

超システムの根源は、生命の発生から免疫システム、脳、神経の発達そして維持のように、単なる自己複製から始まって自己多様化・自己組織化・自己適応・閉鎖性と開放性・自己言及・自己決定という特徴をもちつつ、その存在自体が自己目的化し機能するシステムを示しています。
それを今回は、社会的・文化的な存在（例えば都市や官僚システム等）になで概念的に広げていこうとしている意欲作です。

ただ、本人が超システムという考えを持つに至った自身の専門領域の成果を説明することにページを費やしているのに対し、超システムの概念を広げて語る部分が少なくは感じました。それと、ちょっと消化不良な感じもしました。（ちなみにその免疫や発生の研究成果を読むだけでも相当面白かったですが…）

超システムという概念自体は非常に面白い概念だと思います。また、今後の研究の成果次第では、発生から自己複製〜自己決定までを含む存在（社会的・文化的なものも含む）は全て超システムの概念の中で語られるようになる可能性も感じさせてくれます。

そういう意味では今後も論の充実を図り、発言を続けていって欲しい考え方だと思います。

でも、やっぱり個人的には免疫や発生に関する話題の方が面白かったですね。

日本の科学ジャーナリズムの貧弱さは、いまさら書く気でも無いくらい情けない。科学立国なのに科学に飢えた読者を満足させられないというどこか間違った状況がいつまで続くのか不安だ。もちろん、極まれにそういう状況と無関係な質の高い科学解説書が現れる。この本もそうだ。傑作といっていい。

作者は免疫学の第一線の研究者でその立場から一般向けに平易に免疫について語ったのが「免疫の意味論」だった。本書「生命の意味論」はその続きの感覚で面白く読める。内容は豊富で深いので

科学解説好きの読書子にぴったりの一冊。

私には科学の知識なんて全然ないのですが、わかりやすいのですらすら読むことができました。普段科学に興味のない方にも是非読んでいただきたい一冊です。世の中の見え方が変わりますよ。
