さくらももこが影響を受けたという、
イギリスのエロール・ル・カインという人が紹介されています。

この人はとてもステキな絵を描く人で、
この本にも何枚かの絵が紹介されていました。
本当にステキな絵で、私もこの人の描いた絵本が欲しくなりました。

もう亡くなってしまった人ですが、
その人が残した絵や文章はこれからも生き続けることができて
なんだかすてきだなと思いました。

イギリスのことも書かれていて、
さくらももこファンでイギリス好きの私には良い本です。
でも、興味のない人は読まないほうがいいかも･･･

内容は、さくらももこが憧れていた「ルカイン」と言うイングランドの絵本作家が、亡くなってしまい彼の生前の情報を求めて旅に行くと言う物です。本の半分くらいは、ルカインの絵本の絵とももこの絵で埋められていて、読み物しては、中身は少ない物になっています。ただ、生前の情報を求めてわざわざ英国まで行っているにもかかわらず、それらの情報が一切載っていません。それは、彼が親しかった人に会いにいき話を聞いている最中、彼女は強烈な眠気に襲われ、話がひと段落した時のお茶会の様子等は詳細に書かれているにも関わらず、肝心な部分が皆無なのに疑問が残ります。他はももこの大好きなウエッジウッドの話、旅行中のレストランの話等、本題から随分ズレた内容ばかり書いてありました。

さくらももこさんがエロール・ル・カインという絵本画家の存在を知ったいきさつや、弟子入りしたいとまで憧れていた彼の死を知った時の衝撃から始まる

エッセイ。「彼の偉業をもっと世に知らしめたい！」との思いが、カインに縁のある様々な人々を、さくらさんの周りに引き寄せ、終にはル・カインの足跡をたどる為イギリスまで渡ったももこさん。ウェッジウッド社でのＶＩＰ待遇やホテルでの火事騒動などを面白おかしく描写しながらも、カインと交流のあった人々との心の触れ合いも描かれていて、さくらさんのエロール・ル・カインへの深い思い入れが伝わって来る本です。さくらさんやカインのカラー挿し絵が、ふんだんに盛り込まれているのに、この値段は安すぎかも？
