日本のがん治療の矛盾を記載した本．

著作は2005年なので少し古いはずなのに，事態は変わっていないのは
著者が普遍性を感じたのか，もしくは、進展がないのか、両方ともか
のどれかである．
利きもしない薬を使われて（これはさすがに改善したみたいだが）
医療費を多量に使い、死んでゆく患者たちの群像にどうやったら入らない
で済むかまでは書いていないが，心づもりはできるのではないかと思う．

喫煙で肺がんの発生率が２２．４倍，喉頭がんで１０．５倍
食道がんは7.6倍（いづれも男性）の事実を知らない人は
読むべき本ではないかと思う．

　この本の出版は２００５年、私が読んだのは、２００９年、たった４年後であるが、なんと日本のガン医療体制の進展が早いことか。この本を書いたＮＨＫのがん特別取材班の提案を真摯に受け止めたその後の行政の結果でもあろう。
　しかし、進展しているとはいえ、まだまだ日本の医療体制は特にアメリカのそれと比較して遅れているのが実情ではないか。その一因である日本の医学教育体制の、あえていえば後進性による医療レベルのばらつきと、第四のガン治療とも言うべき免疫力を高める治療法への蔑視など、今後も特別取材班が活動すべきテーマは多々残っていることを忘れてはなるまい。
