僕は高校時代男子校で、こういった経験はありません。でもって当然バスに乗る方を選んでしまうぐうたら生徒だったと思います。でも何だろう…　この本を読んだ後の「何か俺、青春時代にとんでもないもの置いてきちまったなぁ〜」という感覚。高校時代はもう十数年も前になりますが、確実にその時の自分を呼び起こす力みたいなものがこの本に秘められていると感じました。なんだろう、ワンワン泣くでもなければ、笑い満載ってわけでもないんだけど、むしろ質素な感じ。そこがとてつもなく愛おしく感じさせてくれる作品だと思います。置いてきたものはもう手の届かない場所にあるけれどあの時の純粋な気持ち、感覚はきっと何十年経っても思い起こす事が出来るんだ。まだまだ青春真っ盛りになれます。

ともすれば吹き上がってきそうになる想いを、抑え抑えしながら読了しました。
甲田貴子と西脇融を中心に描かれた青春群像に、自分のその時代とは何の接点もないはずなのに、どうしようもなく重なってしまう友人たちの顔、顔、顔。
夜を徹して８０kmをただただ歩く、北高の「歩行祭」で、貴子の胸に秘めた一つの賭けが、どう展開するのかもさることながら、恩田さんが鮮やかに描き分ける、高校３年生たちのどの人物にも、自分の過去の友達が重なってきて胸に迫るものがありすぎました。
必死で歩く彼らが、苦痛を紛らわせるために話すおもしろいこと、楽しいこと、恋の打ち明け話、将来のこと。気の合う大事な友人としてお互いに選び合って、最後の行事をともに過ごすことの意味。お互いが理解しあうためのぎこちないとも言える手続きが、今の私には眩しく思えました。友情だけは、差し替えがきかないものだと、つくづく思うからです。思い切ってやってみることで、つかむことができるものは、恋や勉強だけじゃない。貴子は、融との関係を、自分の人生に深く関わるものと捉えたからこそ、自分の賭けを行動に移せたのです。もちろん、後押ししてくれた友人たちの気持ちもちゃんと理解しながら。貴子と融における関係は、確か『まひるの月を追いかけて』で使われていたモチーフだったと思うのですが（違っていたらごめんなさい）、それがこのような学園ものの青春小説でどう展開するのか、興味津々でしたが、実に鮮やかに恩田さんは、味付けを変えて差し出してくれました。「ノスタルジーの魔術師」の手腕に、見事に 嵌められました。起こり得た奇蹟は、ちゃんと私の胸に納まっています。

　８０キロという常軌を逸した距離を歩く高校生活の大イベント「歩行祭」。そのイベントを青春の決算として、様々な人間模様が繰り広げられます。まず、歩行祭という舞台設定が秀逸でした。青春小説の定石であるクラスや学園などは登場せず、ひたすら歩く。その極限状態だからこそ、普段出来ない話をしてしまう。そこから、登場人物の普段の生活や思いが鮮やかに浮かび上がってきます。
　話的にはちょいと出来過ぎという気もしますが、「歩き続けるのは辛いけれども、歩行祭は終って欲しくない」という登場人物とページをめくる私たちは、気持ちを共有出来るでしょう。その点でも、良質の青春小説。
