受け継がれる謎のゲーム「小夜子」。
今年は六番目の年。
そのゲームが行われるところまでは素晴らしく面白かった。
ところがその後、積み木が崩れる様を思い浮かべてしまうような「散らかし」っぷり。
せっかく張った伏線、せっかく積み上げてきた魅力ある「小夜子」像が台無しです。
「あれは結局なんだったんだろう・・・」と読後に唖然としてしまう点が少なくない。

細かいことは気にせず、作品の「雰囲気」だけを楽しんでください。

恩田さんの作品は途中までは面白く読めるのですが、謎が最後まではっきりとせず、今ひとつすっきりしないと思うのは私だけでしょうか？
この小説も、ある高校を舞台に繰り広げられますが、ホラーなのか、青春物なのか、どっちつかずのまま。
特にジャンルに拘って読んでいる訳ではありませんが、心に残る物があまり無い。感動したというレビューを読むと年取って感性が鈍ってるのかなと思ってしまう。

舞台となる高校に伝わる「サヨコ伝説」に基づいた、学校ぐるみのゲーム自体はおもしろく、それをモチーフにしたところは評価したい。しかし、多くの謎を残したまま迎える結末は釈然とせず、「サヨコ伝説」と実際に起きた事件との関連性が希薄で、せっかくの魅力溢れる「サヨコ伝説」を生かしきったとは言いがたい。かと言って、純粋な学園ものとして楽しめるほどのものでもなく、著者は一体どこに焦点を絞りたかったのか、がわからない作品である。
