お金持ちの老婦人・桐子＆その娘の柊子（40代。既婚・子ども無し）と、
建築家でおしゃれな父親（やはり40〜50代？）と帰国子女の娘（15歳）。
そんな2組の親子が旅先のリゾート地で偶然出会った。
同じホテルに滞在していて、お互いのテーブルにシャンパンや
ワインをおごりあったりしているうちに、親しくなっていく。
旅が終わり、彼らは普段暮らしている場所(東京）で会うようになる。
テレビ局に勤める柊子の夫も加わって、人間関係の糸が少しずつ
もつれていくが…というお話。
人間関係の糸がもつれて、というと、ドロドロなお話みたいですが、
もつれても、もつれても、ドロドロせずに静かなまま物語は
続きます。
たとえば「この人と寝るのって道義的には無しでしょ」
みたいな相手とセックスしても、葛藤したりしないのがこの物語の
登場人物たちの特徴だ。その場の気分で気に入った人と距離を
つめていく。すぐに解けるちょうちょむすびのような不安定な
人間関係。誰も、それを固い絆にしたいなんて思ってはいない。
そのふわふわ、ふらふらした感じがなんとも不安定で読んでいると
酔いそうだ。あんまり良くないお酒を飲んだときみたいな
「やばいなーこれ」という感じの酔い方で。

私個人は、例えば不倫を描くお話なら「いけないことを
してしまった」と分かりやすくもがいたりする人間くさいお話の
ほうが好みなので、この無味無臭な感じは、ある意味ホラー小説
みたいで不気味にさえ感じました。でも、その硬質で透明感があって
静かな展開の中に潜む情熱の火種みたいなものを抱えているからこそ
この物語特有のあぶなっかしい感じがとても魅力的なのかも。

がらくたって何に対してがらくだなのか？私は自分の女房を他の男に抱かせる原さんは大嫌いだ。高校生の美海を抱いてしまうのも気持ち悪い。なんか気持ち悪い集団だなあ・・・読んだあとの気分は良くない。本気で腹立てている私って、もしかして作者の仕掛けにはまってるのかな？
やっぱ高校生とおじさんは不釣り合いだよ。あー胸焼け。

自分の夫が、いくら自分を世界で一番愛しているからとわかっていても、
ほかの女の子と平気で寝たりできるのは、私には考えられないし、
ラストには正直がっかりした。
せめて、紳士でいてもらいたかった。
後味がなんとも悪い1冊でした。
