作者ご本人の手による逆翻訳バージョン『レーダーホーゼン』もさることながら、それぞれの作品が少しずつ手直しされているので、長年の読者としては手持ちの既刊を片手に、比較して読むのがなにより楽しかった。―――『パン屋再襲撃』の最後や、『カンガルー通信』の文体、『四月―』の加筆や『納屋を焼く』のモラリティーに関する記述等々、加筆修正分に実に納得。逆説的に、手直し前の作品のある種の「若さ」も感じられて、それはそれでまたいいなぁ、と納得。
ところで「そんな短編あったっけ？」と、実は発売前から思っていた『窓』が、改題された『バートバカラックはお好き？』だったことに、わたしは読んでみて初めて気がついたけれど、加筆修正された本書収録分は、まさに『窓』
、『窓』以外にありえない、と感じた。それぞれほんの少しの加筆だけれど、そこに２０何年分の想いみたいなものを・・・。
そういえば、今は亡き中島らもさんが「自分の子供が幼いうちに２０年落ちのジョークをしかける」というような話をどこかで書いていた。少し違う気はするけれど、「２０年落ち」という点ではまさに落ちたような気分。
「短編？全部読んで知ってるよ」という方も、きっと楽しめます。もちろん村上作品は初めてという方はなおさらのこと。フィスケットジョンさん、いい短編集を作ってくださっています。海外で売れているのも納得。

この1冊で村上春樹さんの前期の短編世界に触れることが出来ます。
あっさりと読んだ後に残る不安は、ムラカミワールドそのものです。
装丁のワイアーアートの象も素晴らしい。市販して欲しいと切に願います。

　本書はアメリカで編集・出版された短篇集の逆輸入版ですが、日本の読者にも人気が高い作品が収められており、そういった意味では、古くからの村上春樹ファンの方にも、また最近ファンになった方にとっても、是非所有しておきたい一冊ではないでしょうか。音楽の世界では、ベスト版の発売はよくあることですが、文芸の世界ではなかなかないので。
　「パン屋再襲撃」、「ファミリーアフェア」、「午後の最後の芝生」等、一般的に人気の高い作品もいいですが、個人的には、表題になっている「象の消滅」がお気に入りです。これを読んだ後の衝撃は、他のどの短篇をも上回るものでした。
