事件の舞台となる五能線は青森県にある人気路線だ。本書はこの路線周辺の観光案内もしてくれる。まず２人の私立探偵が次々と罠にはめられ、事件の容疑者となる。このあたりでだいたい犯人の目星はつく。十津川警部らは例によって実際に列車に乗ったりしてその華麗な殺人トリックを見破る。そして物語が証拠固めの段階に入ると、俄然緊迫感が増してくるので手に汗を握る。このトリック（蜃気楼ダイヤ）に関して知識のある方は、相当鉄道に詳しい方だと思う。詳しくは本書の読む楽しみとしていただきたい。

それにしても、著者の鉄道トリックはいつも分単位だ。きわめて効率良く殺人を行わなければ物語は成り立たない。その事でフィクション性を強く感じさせられるので、かえってほっとする。もし殺人がいとも簡単に行われると恐ろしい。

著者は色々な小説雑誌で作品を連載しているが、小説雑誌は月刊誌だ。一つの章を読むと、次の章までは一ヶ月待つことになり、内容がおぼろげになってしまう。本書は小説新潮に７ヶ月にわたって連載されたものだが、私は雑誌連載を読んでいたのに本書を購入して再度読んでしまった。欲を言えば、さらに旅情たっぷりに描いて欲しかった。

　またも十津川警部の元部下で私立探偵の橋本豊が容疑者になって青森県警に逮捕されてしまいます。罠にはめられた橋本を救うため、十津川と亀井は五能線に乗ることになります。そこで意外なトリックを発見するのですが…一筋縄ではいかない青森県警と警視庁の十津川警部の対立も見物です。罠にはめた犯人の動機は何か？単純には解明できない謎が多いですが、今回も十津川警部達は本当の犯人を追い詰めます。はたして送検される前に元部下で私立探偵の橋本豊を助けられるのか、十津川警部の執念の捜査が始まります。内容は私個人の意見として意外性があって面白かったです。

秋田県と青森県の日本海側を走る五能線は、白神山地、日本海の荒波と夕陽、秀麗な岩木山などの景観が見事で、「乗ってみたい路線」などとして、旅行雑誌等で取り上げられることの多い路線である。

その人気に一役買っているのが、JRの行楽列車、「リゾートしらかみ」号である。パノラミックな大きな窓、海に向かって並ぶグループ用のボックス席、津軽三味線の生演奏など、この列車に乗ること自体が旅の目的となりうる列車だ。しかも、ブルーの「青池」編成や、グリーンの「欅（ぶな）」編成など、複数の種類の車両があり、何度乗っても楽しめる。

そして、行楽列車ならではの独特のダイヤ。「蜃気楼ダイヤ」と名付けられたその運転方法が、事件解明への大きな鍵となる。
