吉村昭の遺作短編集。人の記憶容量は一定のため新しい記憶からこぼれ出て、昔の記憶は澱のように溜まっているという書き出しから、もう彼の世界は始まっている。エッセイとも小説ともつかぬ物語は、遠い記憶が突然よみがえる懐かしさと、記憶に留める悲しさをいつもながら伝えている。元気の出る小説ではない。ただ、人が生きることの重みを静かに受け止めながら、我が身の孤独を預けられる心地良さが身上だ。どの作品もデジャ・ヴュがあるにもかかわらず新鮮な思いがする。妻が記した作家の最後は、死を小説の主題に多く扱った彼らしい潔さを感じさせ、あまつさえ作家自身の「死」こそ遺作にふさわしいと思えるのだ。

　吉村昭という著名な人物の遺作という小説を読んで、講釈をたれるようにレビューをするなどということは、本当に恐れ多いことだ。人の解釈の仕方は様々で、自分の解釈がつまらないものだったら情けないし。。。と、思っていることを踏まえて書いてみたい。
　この本には、メッセージ性が感じられない。「私はこう感じた」「こう感じる人もいるだろう」ということを記述しておられる。 まず、その点が吉村氏らしいというところかと感じる。
　これは短編集だけれども、著者が綴ったことは、、、（１）人の死はいろんな形があるということだと思う。 自殺・他殺・尊厳死・事故死・・・事故死といっても全くの赤の他人が、本当に丁重にご遺体を扱うこともある。人に愛された人生を過ごして、忘れられ、孤独死となると、誰にも弔われることなく時が流れることもある。（ ２）さらに、そうした死、それぞれに遺族や関係者が心を揺らして、行動を選択する難しさに迫られる。そして感性が少し変わる。今まで見ていた景色が微妙に変化する。 （３）そして、、、様々な死とそれに関わる事情が、いつの時代にも同時にいくつも並行して起こっている。 その事実が短編集を造る。

　吉村氏はそういうことを綴っておられる。そして、「私の死もそのうちの１つだ」ということも暗に伏しているように感じる。「伏している」というか、そう考えておられることもあって、こうした作品が生まれたと感じる。

「死」という答えのない話題がつきない事情。
考えを深めるのには良い本かと思います。

実はいまだ「ひとすじの煙」と奥様津村節子氏の「遺作について」しか
読み終えていません。
辛いのです。３０年来、吉村先生の作品を読んできたものとしては、
これが最後で、そして先生の決断。言葉がありません。

「ひとすじの煙」の宿のまわりの自然の描写･･･これぞ吉村先生の文体と
いうべきもので、冷徹な目とその底にある熱い思いが感じられます。
文体などとは多分今の若い作家には関心ごとではないでしょう。
しかし、先生はご自身の文体を創り上げるの非常な苦心をされています。
すさまじいまでの第一級の文章力です。そして今では少なくなった
「美しい日本語」を感じさせてくれます。
そして「人間」を見つめる冷静さとその中にある思いやりと暖かさ。

あとの作品はゆっくりと心を落ち着けながら読みます。
吉村先生　中学生時代から読み続けた先生の作品とそれを通じての先生の
お人柄、そして人間としての高潔さと尊厳の大切さを教えていただきました。
ありがとうございます。本当にありがとうございます。
