読み終わって、何かざらっとしたものが心に滓のように残りました。
それは何だろうと考えて見ると、この夫婦の様に途中「１１年間、口を利かなかった」と言うのは極端にしても、他人同士が作る「家族」と言うものの「理解の限界」はあるのだろうと思います。
それが、この夫婦の様になるのかどうかは別にしても、一緒にいるのに感じる「孤独」と言うものは大なり小なりあるものでしょう。
そうした一体になれないもどかしさの中にありながら、「終の住処」で迎える二人の日々が、やがてやってくるのでしょう。
そのあたりのどうしようもない「寂しさ」のようなものを、改めて感じさせられる一冊でした。

この本の中で、もう一つ大きなテーマがあるように思います。
それは、主人公がアメリカでの仕事に挫折しようとしていた時、上司から届く手紙です。
「現在」と言うのは、その一瞬ではなく、「過去」の集大成であり「未来」の可能性であると言うことです。
これは「生きる」と言うことにおいて、非常に重要なポイントだろうと思います。
「生きる」と言うことは、常に「生涯」を生きているのだということです。
このことを心に留めて、残された人生を生きたいと思います。

　だらだらと人間の思考そのもののまま続く文章。時間の流れの遅速がつかみがたく、論理的に整理もされていない。確かにこれが人間だ。これが人間の思考そのままだ。妻のことは本質的に理解できないし、分かっていながら不倫を繰り返す自分自身だって、全くながら理解できない。
　結果と原因が入れ替わっているような混乱も、理解をあきらめてしまえば首肯できる。世の中には自分に分からないことがたくさんあるのだと。
　だれのために書いているのだ、この小説は。誰に読ませたいのだ、これを。ああ、いやしかし、芥川賞系って、こんな感じなのだった。で、結局文学オタクの私たちが読んでるわけだし…。

今年の芥川賞受賞作。筆者の三井物産勤務のサラリーマンという経歴に興味を持った。文学するのは久しぶり、という期待感もあった。

まず眼を引くのが、この物語のテーマが愛であること。主人公の男は極めて身勝手な想いに振り回されながら、時に身勝手な行為に身を窶しながら、長い時間を押し進めていく。不倫するかどうか、それをこの妻のように許すのかどうかはともかく、結婚生活ってこんなもので違和感や不機嫌さや悩みを抱えながらも毎日を過ごしていくものだと思う。不協和音を織り交ぜつつも永い時間を共有し、紡いでいくのが、普通の人たちにとっての愛の形なんだと妙に納得した。

次に、筆者の技法ともいえる時間の扱い方。「固くごつごつした物体を積み上げる」などと評されているが、段落の区切りがほとんどない文体のまま、長い時間の物語が連続して語られていく。選評でこの手法に対する評価がまちまちなところを見ても、決して洗練されているとは言えないが、ある時点から過去を走馬灯のように振り返ればこのような語り口になるのだろうし、自分にとっては違和感なく読めた。

最後に、言葉を多少過剰なくらいに連ねていく贅沢さ。冒頭の夏の公園で不思議な光景を見る場面とか、単純にはよくスケッチしてるなぁと感心するのだが、文学らしい贅沢さがあって良かった。その後はスピード感を上げるために装飾を多少手控えているが。

物語は主人公が５０歳くらいのところで、２０年を振り返り終わったというように唐突に終わっている。でなんなの、という読者の声が聞こえてきそうだが、これから老後を二人きりで過ごしていくんだ、という余韻は、そこまで行ってない世代にとっては、響いてこずよくわからなかった。
