1938(昭和13)年北京生れ。武蔵野美術大学デザイン科卒。ベルリン造形大学でリトグラフを学ぶ。絵本作家、エッセイスト。代表作に『わたしが妹だったとき』(新美南吉児童文学賞)、『わたしのぼうし』(講談社出版文化賞絵本賞)、エッセイ『神も仏もありませぬ』(小林秀雄賞)など。2003年柴綬褒賞を受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

たいへんなものを読んでいるという思いに苛まれながら読んだ。
ぐさりぐさりと突きささることば。
今まで私が人に言えなかったことを、こんなに激しくぶつけられて青ざめた。
「母が嫌い」
この一言を胸に隠して何十年も過ごしてきた。
人に知られてはいけないと思っていた。
佐野さんは、ご自分のお母様との相克を隠さず書いた。
激しく厳しく書いた。頭が下がる。

私は母にぶつかっていくことすらしなかった。
喧嘩などしてやるものかと思っていた。
同じ土俵に降りていくのが嫌だったのだ。

たいへんなものを読んだ。
青ざめて震える心が止まらないままだ。

まっすぐに愛することのできなかった母への、
ストレートな気持ちがつづられている。

憎しみ、嫌悪してきた母が高齢になり痴呆になった。
痴呆になってはじめて、著者は母に心を開き始める。
母の手をさすり、１つの布団へ一緒に入り、
母を老人ホームに入れたことで「母を捨てた」と自分を責める。

（母が元気だったころの話では）著者が母に悪態をつくと、
母はいつもエプロンを目にあてて泣いていた、とある。
しかし、逆に、その母も著者をたくさん傷つけている。

ひどい言葉で母と喧嘩した自分の記憶が、読中、ひょっこり頭をもたげて苦しくなる。
人のいない場所へ行って、「わーっ」と叫びたくなった。

でも、著者の痴呆の母は言う。
「もう何でも忘れましょう」

悲しいのだけど、お涙ちょうだいのベタベタした雰囲気がなく、
ラストの母の死まで、
著者流のカラリとした風のような爽やかさが行間に流れる。

「母娘っていろいろあるけど、それもいいんじゃない？嘘だけど。」
笑いながらそんなジョークを言われた気がして、
自分の母と仲良く買い物にでも行きたくなった。

びっくり。自伝的なエッセイとして読み進むうちに、こちらのこころの中に大洪水が。それは読み手であるわたしの内部の砦や壁や構築物を、きれいに押し流す。過去も未来もなくなる。巨大なエネルギーのほとばしる文章なのに、どこにも悪意や邪念がなく、いやあるのかもしれないけれど轟々と、ただ奔流のように流れる。流れて、しゃらくさいもの、気取ったものを全部洗い流してしまう。
