感嘆するほかない思い切った異世界の物語である．主人公は子供のうちに母を殺され自らは去勢された厭太郎という青年．死骸が化して成る汚木を彫って仏と呼ばれるテレパシーロボットが作られ，この仏を操って相手と戦う合せなる競技が行われる．厭太郎が職務上殺してしまった仏造りの親分の娘 犬千代 が公の合せでの決闘による復讐を申し出て許可されるが，犬千代は合せの名手で厭太郎はこのままでは殺されるほかない状況に追い詰められる．そこで合せの鍛錬に入るのだが，この辺になると死臭にも慣れてきてまあ読めるようになる．よく考えられたファンタジーではあるが，雰囲気が余りにも不吉で始めは吐き気との戦いを余儀なくされる．とにかく楽しさの成分の皆無の異世界物語であるし，作者が若いせいかひどい当て字が乱用されるので慣れるまでは読み易くない．減点の所以である．

格闘技ゲームが好きな人なら試合（合せ）のシーンは楽しめると思えるのだが、上段、下段攻撃など挌闘ゲームに知悉していない人にはなんとも退屈な描写だろう。かく言う私も挌闘ゲームの愛好者だったので、これを文学へ昇華させるのはそれなりの工夫が必要と思っていたが、作者は挌闘ゲームへの愛情をストレートにぶつけてしまっているため、必ずしもその想いが読み手に伝わっていないのが残念。いにしえの日本に似せた異世界の描写に古来の事物の用語を使って雰囲気を醸し出させようとしているのだが、難しいばかりで知っても別にこれといって感動もない。『三度笠』って言葉があったので辞書で調べてみたけど、ふーん、程度の感想しか持ちえませんでした。
読み手を限定するような小説の書き方に疑問符が並びました。

　まずは物語の特異性に舌を巻いた。

　ゲームセンターでゲームに熱狂する者達の如く、仏と仏を戦わせる話だ。

　注目すべきは、人も動物も死んだら汚木という木になり、それを仏師が彫り仏と言う操り人形を作ると言う事だ。作中の世界では死んだものをリサイクルするが如く平然と利用している。これは良く言えば死と言う概念の新しい形であり画期的発想といえるだろう。悪く言えば死を軽んじているとも言える。紙一重なシステムだと思った。

　少年の前に不条理にも立ちはだかる壁。少年はそれを打破しなくては未来は無い。幼き頃からの呪縛に絡め取られた人生を、少年は戦いの中で少しずつ前へ前進していく。己の中に閉じこもったままでは前へは進めない。

　不条理、不利なスタートからなので、ページをめくるごとにだんだん未来志向で、読後感は非常に良い。
