約４０頁にもわたる口絵に収められた円空仏の個性豊かなフォルムに魅入りましたし、本文の詳細な叙述も精読しました。

本書は、過去の研究史を丹念に追いかけ、先人の記した研究視点の曖昧さを見つけ出し、円空について記された様々な史料を綿密な史料批判を繰り返しながら丁寧に解き明かした円空研究の決定稿とも言える労作だと感じました。

円空ブームは、昭和４０年代後半におこりました。木喰とあわせて五来重氏を中心とする民俗学者が取り上げましたので、その当時私も飛騨高山、岐阜、名古屋と円空の足跡を辿りながら円空仏を鑑賞する旅にでたのをよく覚えています。

あれから３０数年経って、今また新たな地平を開く素晴らしい研究成果に巡り合うのは幸せです。
梅原猛という稀代の学者の関心テーマとなったのは幸いなことで、８０歳を超える梅原氏の旺盛な学問への関心の高さに驚きます。聖徳太子と法隆寺の謎に迫った『隠された十字架』や、柿本人麻呂の生涯を探究した『水底の歌』という知的好奇心をくすぐる名著に続くような作品だと思いました。

冒頭の円空仏ＭＡＰが掲載されており、ラストに円空の年譜が記されており、口絵カラーと本文中モノクロの所蔵先も記してありますので、実際に円空仏と対面する際の参考になりましょう。

円空研究は多くは民間の名も無い研究者が地道に献身的に行ってきたが、いまだ多くの謎や誤解も残されている。これら多くの研究を詳細に顧み、さらに検証を根気強く行いながら統括する研究者が出てくることは強く望まれていたとは思う。しかし、その労力を考えると極めて困難であることは確実であるが、今回、梅原猛氏がついにやってくれた。
このように、研究書としての側面の強い本であるので、円空そのものに強い思い入れがなければちょっと堅苦しく難しいかもしれない。しかし、よく読むと、梅原氏の円空への熱い想いに感激し、こちらもさらに円空に興味が出てくるという本でもある。
それほど円空への想いの強い梅原氏であるので、個人のエゴで円空像を歪めた研究者に対しては、それが権威者であろうと全く容赦はない。ここから、研究者に不可欠な倫理観や、80歳を超えてもいささかも衰えない梅原氏の意欲や情熱も感じ取って欲しいと思う。
この本により、円空がいっそう注目されるようになると思われるが、それは非常に良いことであり、喜ばしい。

本の冒頭48ページに亘って円空仏の所在地の地図と各地に散在する円空仏の写真が載せられており、これを眺めるだけで、買ってよかったぁ〜と思えます。「ありがたい」という言葉は、こういう仏様のためにあるのかな、と思いました。

著者が円空の人生と自分自身のそれとを引き比べながら語っているところが面白いなと思う半面、他の著作に比べ思い入れが強すぎて論理がよく見えない部分も感じました。円空好きにはうんうん、といいながら読める本ですが、独自の視点で歴史を切り通す梅原節を聞きたいのならちょっと期待はずれかも。
