主人公マーコは多感で知的な青年だ。孤独である。家族に先立たれる。孤独である。友人に世話になり、恋人ができる。それでも孤独である。奇妙な老人の世話をし、それから自分のルーツがひも解かれていく。かつ孤独である。これほど孤独がこころやさしく､甘美で、酩酊するものだということを、この本によって教えられたように思う。ストーリーを覚えてしまっても、こういう感覚に触れたいからもう一度読みたい、と思わせる数少ない文学の一つであるような気がする。

なんと言っても面白い。原書と翻訳のスタイルが見事に一致していると思う。ノリのいい文体で、読者を一気に小説世界に引き込む。次々と偶然に起こる出来事のおかげで、主人公は生き延びられるのだが、その偶然が、なんとなく必然に思えるのがいい。最後にたどり着く部分が、これまた圧巻だ。

一息に読み、そしてもう一度ゆっくりと細部まで文章を味わいながら読んだ。モザイクのように組み合わされたエピソードの数々は、全体としてすばらしい"いわゆる青春小説"を編み上げているが、個別に見てもとても印象的なものばかりだ。柴田元幸の翻訳もすばらしいので、ポールオースターファン・現代アメリカ文学ファンでなくとも、また翻訳小説を敬遠しがちなひとでも、ぜひ読んで欲しい一冊だ。
