アーヴィング,ジョン
1942年アメリカ、ニューハンプシャー州生れ。ニューハンプシャー大学を卒業後、レスリングのためにピッツバーグ大学に通学、その後ウィーン大学に留学、ヨーロッパをオートバイで放浪する。帰国後アイオワ大学創作科でヴォネガットの指導を受けた。後にはレイモンド・カーヴァーとともに後進の指導にあたる。’68年『熊を放つ』でデビュー、’78年『ガープの世界』を発表し世界的なベストセラーとなった

小川 高義
1956年横浜生れ。東大大学院修士課程修了。翻訳家(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

「ガープの世界」「サイダーハウス・ルール」などで有名な現代アメリカ文学の旗手ジョン・アーヴィングの短編＆エッセイ集です。
小説ともエッセイともつかない作品が多くて不思議な感じでした。
「ピギー・スニードを救う話」でアーヴィングが小説を書くきっかけになったような出来事が書かれていて、その後何作品か挟んで、最後に「小説の王様」の中でチャールズ・ディケンズの文学論が書かれていました。
「小説の王様」では、ディケンズの素晴らしさをたたえ、現代文学の露骨に感情や感傷を書かないあり方を批判しているような文章が、現代アメリカ文学の旗手が書いていると考えるとおもしろかったです。
文章が多少読みにくかったです。

表題作が一番好き。
「Trying to Save」＝キャッチャー（イン ザ ライ）な気持ちと、同時に相反する気持ち。
それは小説家だけではなく、だれでも持っている、ということに気づかされる。さすが。
「Trying to Save」の方法が小説家ならではだからこそ、こうしてその「さすが」が書けてしまうわけだ。

「ああ、やっぱりジョン・アーヴィングはいいな」って思える１冊。
８つの作品からなる短編集なのだが、とくに表題作のエッセイ『ピギー・スニードを救う話』がいい。「すさまじい体臭を放ち、見た目にも醜いピギー・スニードの悲劇」を通して、アーヴィングはじつに正直に、なぜ自分は小説を書くのかを語っている。アーヴィングという１人の作家を超えて、「作家の仕事とは何か」が語られているように思う。読者の立場からは、なぜわれわれは小説を読むのか、その１つの答えがあるように思う。
このエッセイは、『ガープの世界』『ホテル・ニューハンプシャー』『サイダーハウス・ルール』などの読後感を裏づける話と言ったら、鼻白む人もいるかもしれないが、僕にとってはそうだった。「感動」に理由づけなどいらないのかもしれないが、ときどき、その理由（温かい涙が溢れた理由）を理解したいと思うときがある。それをアーヴィング自ら語ってくれている（それがまた感動的なんだけど）。
アーヴィングのファンだけでなく、小説好きの方にぜひ読んでいただきたいと思うほど、すばらしいエッセイ。
