1947年メイン州生れ。貧しい少年時代から恐怖小説を好む。高校教師、ボイラーマンといった職業のかたわら執筆を続け、’74年に『キャリー』でデビュー。好評を博し、以後『呪われた町』『デッド・ゾーン』など、次々とベストセラーを生み、“モダンホラーの帝王”と呼ばれる

風間 賢二
1953年東京生れ。武蔵大学人文学部卒業。『ホラー小説大全』で第51回日本推理作家協会賞受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

不条理なだけに続きが気になるシリーズです。
全巻揃えてから読み始めると好いかも知れません。

訳書は分冊化されているので原書ペーパーバックより割高ですが、
原書ハードカバーのカラー挿絵が収録されているので、
旧角川版を持っていても揃えたくなります。

ｽﾃｨｰｳﾞﾝ・ｷﾝｸﾞのﾗｲﾌﾜｰｸ、｢暗黒の塔｣シリーズの第一巻。内容は角川書店から出版されているものとほとんど同じで、変更点はｷﾝｸﾞが話の風呂敷を広げすぎたために、所々でつじつま合わせがしてある程度。問題は本書の装幀と挿絵で、本国でドナルド・M・グラント社より出版されているものを、ほとんどそのまま採用しています。角川版では挿絵はほとんど削られていたので嬉しい限りです。翻訳は可もなく不可もなくといったところですが、私は角川版の池さんの名訳に慣れていたので、違和感がありました。ダークタワーが初めてのキングファンなら角川版と本書を読み比べてみることをおすすめします。

ながいながいプロローグのはじまりです。ファンとしては
「そんなにじらしちゃいやっ」って感じですか。
（あとになって知ることになるが・・・）ていつなのよ。

おしむらくはもう少し翻訳がなんとかならなかったものか。
角川版のほうが雰囲気があるかも。
