相変わらず、脇役がいいです。ＤＪ・ヘンリーには読む人みんな惹かれるのではないでしょうか。「ダークタワー」と深く関連するストーリーだけに、ストラウブとの共作だということを忘れさせるほどキングのにおいが強いです。ｊａｚｚではなく、ロックンロール、であります。もしまだ「タリスマン」を未読なら、そちらから読み始めて吉。そうするだけの価値がある２作品です。欲を言えば、もう３倍くらい長くてもよかった。(^^ゞ上巻のテンポで最後まで行ってほしかったなあ。

スティーヴン・キングとピーター・ストラウブの黄金コンビが17年ぶりによみがえりました。主人公は年はとったがジャック・ソーヤー、前回のキーパーソンもなんとガンスリンガーもどきのファッションで登場となれば、「タりスマン」の続編そのものですが、どっこい今回は少年少女の肉を喰う悪魔が相手であり、ファンタジーとは言ってもホラーの要素が高い作品になっています。しかし、前回同様魅力ある脇役陣に支えられ（狼人間ウルフの”ばっきやろー”が聞けないのは心残りではありますが、盲目のＤＪヘンリー・ライデンはもう最高！）、怖いながらすばらしいファンタジーに仕上がっています。「タリスマン」を読んでいない読者にも、解説がはいるため何の支障もありません。また、キングフリークの皆さんには、この物語を読むとすばらしい特典が与えられます。スピーディがガンスリンガーの衣装で登場し、「暗黒の塔」に関するさまざまなヒントを与えてくれます。「クリムゾン・キング（深紅の王）」の実体は？　「ビーム」とは？　ガンスリンガーの生き残りはローランド一人か？　等々。また、スロー・ミュータント、モノレールのブレインとパトリシアなど懐かしい名前も出てきます。この物語のナビゲーターである魅力的な語り部の口まねをすれば「さて、われらはPowerMac G5に向かっているレビュアーのもとをしばし離れ、書斎の窓より空へと飛び立とう。われらが向かう先は近くの本屋。目的はただ一つ、「暗黒の塔」シリーズの最新刊「Wolves of the Calla」をレビュアーより先に手にいれるため・・・」

「タリスマン」（新潮文庫）で大冒険を繰り広げた主人公。２０年後、彼はロサンゼルス市警を３５歳という若さで辞職して、ウィスコンシン州の片田舎で隠遁生活を送っていた。彼がこの地でひっそり暮すことも、思えば大きな歯車の一部に組み込まれていたのかも知れない。彼は連続少年少女誘拐殺人事件に否応なしに巻き込まれていくのだ。前作とは異なり、ファンタジー色が薄くなり、モダンホラー・ミステリーという体裁になっている。到るところで伏線が張り巡らされており、下巻でそれらの点がどう線としてつながっていくのか、大変気になるところ。本書から読み出しても、その面白さが半減することはないと思うが、前作「タリスマン」を読んでおくと面白さが倍増するだろう。
