歴史、人物、地理、数字、科学など、多彩なラインナップで、行にして２、３行以内の薀蓄が数百点開陳されている。高尚なものがあれば、ナンセンスなものもある。知的好奇心がどんどん膨らんでいくのがうれしい。サラサラと読んでいて思わずうれしくなるのが「あっ、これ知ってる！」という奴に出くわしたとき。両手で数えられるほどしかなかったけれど。篇訳者の星新一自身も雑学蒐集癖があって、アメリカの風刺漫画のコレクションに寸評を加えた「進化した猿たち」（新潮文庫）や、明治時代の新聞雑誌広告など、明治の空気を鮮やかに伝えてくれる活字のスクラップ集「夜明けあと」（新潮社）などを残している。役には立たないけれど、知っていると楽しくなる、それが雑学だ。

　トリビアだとか雑学だとかってのがブームっていうかブームを飛び出して定着したっていうかそんな感じだから新しく刷られたんだろーな、という感じ。私にとってはそのへんどーでもいいのだけれど、とりあえずこの本は好きです。
　本屋に並ぶ雑学本の半分くらいは、その情報のおもしろさに関わらず全然おもしろくない。つまり、語り方が下手だったり無機質すぎたりする。
　その点、この本は、単純な記述で済まされている情報が並ぶ中で、ちょこちょこと茶目っ気をきかせた表現や情報の組み合わせ方が見られて、そこで「おもしろいな」と感じることができる。そういうおもしろさがきちんと出るように、訳者の星氏も注意を払って訳されたのだろう。
　僕はこの本が大好きです。

ちょっとした時間や寝しなに読むのにお勧めです。
読んでいくうちに自分が知らなかったことや知ろうともしなかったこと
といくつも出会います。
そしてそれらは殆どが今よりずっと前にかかれたことなのに
あまり古臭く感じないところがアシモフや星新一に共通するすごさだと思います、星新一が好きなら是非読んで欲しいです。
