シェリー
1792‐1822。南イングランド、サセックス州の富裕な大地主の家に生れる。オックスフォード大学に入学、急進的なパンフレットを出したため、翌年放校される。後に怪奇小説『フランケンシュタイン』を書くメアリーと結婚、バイロンと親交を結ぶ。イタリアで、ヨット帆走中に激しい雷雨に遭い溺死

上田 和夫
1928年金沢生れ。東大英文科卒業。元研究社出版編集担当、元明星大学教授(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　美しい言葉の連なりに幻惑される。
　
　繊細な感覚と、鋭い思考により創られた詩の世界は、創作された時代からの時間の流れを全く感じさせない独特の世界を有している。
　文章や語感の卓越した美しさは秀逸。

　この本に収録された、シェリーの詩の殆どに言える事として…。
　

　深い哀しみ、声にならない慟哭、失ってしまった大切な何かを求めるどうしようもない感情、大きな力に対しての憤り、というものが作品の奥底に存在している様に感じる。
　それらの上に言葉が紡がれ、幾つもの詩になっていく。
　シェリー自身が映しだされる詩集。

　この本には、短編詩、長編詩、詩論[詩の擁護]、解説、シェリー年譜、などが収録されています。
　
　言葉の有する力、に触れられる一冊で!す。

私が高校生の時、父に将来の夢を話していました・・
現実味のある将来を話したわたしに対して、
父は、この本を原書で読んでくれました。
海外生活の長い父にとって外国語は一抹の苦労もなく、
「夢少なき私」に何度も何度も読んでくれるのです。
シツコイくらいの父に折れて、原書の全読解は無理でしたので、
訳書を買って父の朗読を聞いてました。

「なんと､美しい響きと、感性・・！」
日本では、あまりポピュラーではないが、
一度は、トライしてほしい一冊です・・。
素敵な恋人とご一緒に・・
ぜひ・・。
