ギャリコが猫好きということで、彼の著書を読みたいと浅はかな考えでしたが、「スノーグース」（他二篇も）を読んで、ただひたすら素晴らしい作品だと思いました。

生きとし生けるものへの限りない愛・この世の中を創造したであろう神への愛や創造主から頂く愛。自然を愛し、生きているもの全てに対しとても心温まる著者の考えや愛情がひしひしと伝わってくるようです。

戦争や貧困など望まれない境遇の中で描かれる主人公たちが、それでも夢や希望や自分のなすべきことを見出し、それに向かって力強く生きていく姿に、信念を持って生きていくことの大切さや素晴らしさを強く感じました。
全てを読み終わった後に残る心がジーンと熱くなる感動の三篇です。

是非一度お読みになられて、ギャリコの素敵なファンタジーに触れてみてください！

本書に収められた三つの短い物語は、静謐でありながら力強いものを
感じました。ひたひたと胸に迫ってきて、心を打つ物語。胸にしみじみ
染みてくるような味わいがありました。

身体にハンディを抱え、孤独な気持ちを抱えたラヤダーという画家と、
ひとりの少女、そして白雁との心の交流を描いた物語――
「スノーグース」（1941年発表）。

イタリアはアシジの町の少年ペピーノが、病気にかかったろばを何とか
助けたい一心で、ローマへと赴く物語――「小さな奇蹟」（1952年）。
リヒテンシュタインの谷間を舞台に、乳の出の悪い弱虫で小柄な牝牛に
奇蹟が起こる物語――「ルドミーラ」（1954年）。

動物に注がれる作者の眼差しの慈しみ深さと、人間と動物との心の絆

から生まれる奇蹟の美しさが湛えられた三つの物語。一本の光の柱と
なって、祈る思いが天に向かって昇っていく凛とした美しさ。
なかでも、第二次大戦下に生まれたひとつの奇蹟を美しく、痛切な
調べとともに歌い上げた表題作に、胸が締め付けられるような感動を
味わいました。

表紙カバーの装画をはじめ、本書に掲載された建石修志さんの挿絵も

雰囲気があり、堪能させられました。

矢川澄子さんの訳文は、いうことなし。ギャリコの作品がひたひたと
胸に迫り、美しく響いてきたのも、訳文の力にあずかるところが
大きかったように思います。

ギャリコの作品でとても気に入っている『ほんものの魔法使』と
『銀色の白鳥たち』は、ここしばらく絶版になっているんですね。
復刊されないかなあ。

　ポール・ギャリコさんが、如何に動物達を愛し、戦争と戦争好きな人々を憎んでいたかが、寓話のように書き綴られた小作品です。以前BBCでもTVドラマ化されましたが、原作も、(丁寧な翻訳も、)素晴らしいですね。
