猫の気持ちや習慣がこんなにわかるなんて、ポール・ギャリコは猫だったことがあるにちがいない。

ジェニィがピーターに教えるこまごまとした猫の作法には説得力があるし、二人の恋の冒険もまるで人間の男女そのままのトラブル満載だ。ジェニィは持ち前の聡明さでピーターの過ちも優しく見守り、いつしか種を超えたラブストーリーを楽しんでいるような気持ちになる。

しかし、野良猫は人間や天候や他の犬猫達となんとか折り合いをつけて必死でいきている。
二人が困難に阻まれるたび、まわりの小さな命のことを考えてしまう。
のんきなのは暖かい家の中にいる子達だけ。人間の気まぐれが猫の心を深く傷つけ、死に至ることもあるだろう。間違っても人間以外に生まれたかったなんていうのは頑張っている動物に対して非常に失礼というものだろう。

大好きなブログ本のなかの「私たちは大昔から一緒なのだから、猫は人なしではいきられないのでは。人は猫を野良なんかにしてはいけなくて、家族にすべきだ」という意味のことばがよみがえった。

この本はジェニィという猫をたとえにして幸せという形のないものを見せてくれているんだね。だけどこんな切ないのはいやだよ。ジェニィ・・ジェニイ・・・


でも、いつも一緒だよね。ジェニイはどこにでもいるんだね。

作者は大好きな猫を使って真実の愛、そして永遠の女性ジェニィを見せてくれたんだね。

　猫好きでない方も納得の純愛物語である。

この本との出合いは２０年近く前だと思う。この本に出合ったことで、私の猫好きが始まりました。”猫の世界を覗いてみたい”なんて、そんな気持ちにさせてくれます。
このお話はファンタジーですが、子供心を失いかけてる大人こそ読んでほしい本です。きっと猫の世界に入り込んでしまいます。そして、最後には涙が止まらなくなります。後には爽やかな感動が残ります。
作者のポール・ギャリコ氏は猫好きで有名だったそうですが、それが作品から伝わってくる素敵な本です。

巻き毛で鼻がちょっと上をむいた愛らしい少年のポールは、軍人大佐の父と、社交的で綺麗な母と、スコットランド生まれでのばあやと暮らしている。ばあやは猫が嫌いな以外は、大人が考えられる範囲の親切は何でもポールにしてくれる。
お母さんはばあやが居なくなると、ポールの世話をするためによる外に出られなくなるので、どうしてもばあやが嫌だという猫を飼うことを許してくれない。
ある日、ポールは公園に真っ白くて可愛い猫を見つけて、撫でようと駆け寄ったところをトラックに跳ねられてしまった。
目が覚めるとポールは家のベットの上で、白猫になっていた。
そしてポールとジェニィの冒険が始まる。

猫好きな人にはぜひ読んでもらいたいです。
胸がきゅーんとして、さらに猫が大好きになります。
私はポールが初めてねずみを食べるところがとても好き。
