4.0 out of 5 stars ミーシャとの美しい思い出は、レクター博士の羊たちの叫び, 2002/12/4
レクター博士は、「羊たちの沈黙」で、自分を原因と結果という因果関係の中で理解されるのを拒否した。しかし、著者は、本書で、レクター博士の幼児体験を明らかにする。これを、レクター博士が超然とした悪でなくなってしまうとして残念がる見解もあるようだが、むしろ、これは、レクター博士も決して例外ではあり得ない、という著者の主張だろう。

桐野夏生氏は、文庫版「レッド・ドラゴン」の解説の中で、それでも、レクター博士の食人の理由は明らかではない、という。もう一つ、決定的な理由を挙げるとしたら、これでしょう。――美食家だから（笑）。きっと、レクター博士にとって、他人はただの動物性蛋白質で（幼児体験がそれを裏付けるわけだが）、こいつの胸腺が美味しそうだ、と思ったら、食べずにはいられないんだろうなぁ。

それにしても、レクター博士の生い立ちまで明らかにしながら、彼と対峙するヴァージャーは、ただの滑稽な骸骨にしか思えない。クラリスと対峙するクレンドラーも、「羊たちの沈黙」ではチルトン博士の心の孤独まで丁寧に描いたトマス・ハリスにしては、あまりに表面的な人物造形ではないだろうか。

細部の描写が非常に面白くて、そのときは夢中でページをめっくても、全体的な読後感に何となく物足りなさが残るのは、そういうところに原因があるのかもしれない。

レクター博士の芸術と知性と邪悪さと狂気の混じった完全なるレクター本。このレクターワールドは時に人を恐怖の彼方にさそい時には人を魅了させる。過去、独白、知性、狂気、残虐、芸術、「記憶の宮殿」レクターの魅力がたっぷり詰まった作品。レクターファンならぜひどうぞ。

映画しか見たことない人にこそ読んで欲しい。他の方がたくさんレビューしているので多言は要しないが、私は映画を先に見たので小説は読んでいなかった。しかし、ハンニバルライジングの小説が読みやすく面白かったので、こちらも読んでみたが、こっちの方が面白い。映画ともかなり違うので、是非映画を見た人も読んで欲しい作品。
