この本の内容を要約すると、こんな感じになる。
「エイズ患者のホーム・ケアワーカーである＜私＞が見つめる、
彼らの最後の日々」。

訳者あとがきで柴田元幸氏も書いているが、上のような要約を見て、
読んでみようと思う人がいる一方で、読みたくないと思う人も、
きっと多いだろう。ほかならぬ私自身がそうだ。

要約を読めば、この本の中身は容易に想像がついてしまう、と思う。
たぶん、ある人は孤独や絶望の中で死んでいき、
ある人は死に面して、閉ざしていた心を開き、
ある人は穏やかに命を終えるのだろうと。
そしてそんな想像は、あながち外れてはいない。

しかし本書の内容を漠然と、そしてステレオタイプに想像したとき、
決定的に欠けているものがある。
それは体の感覚だ。
彼ら一人一人の、生きている体だ。

もう思い通りに動かせない体。食べものを受けつけなくなり、
だんだん空っぽになっていく体。
そこに最後に残されたもの。残していったもの。

＜私＞はドラマチックな物語、感動的な物語を語るのではない。
ただ彼らの生活、その営みを綴るのだ。
そこには、並みの想像では決して及ばない力がある。

　この作家の作品を読むのは初めてでしたが、正直、ここまで素晴らしいとは思っていませんでした。読み始めて最初のうちは、しんどさのほうが先に立ちましたが、頁をめくっていくに連れて、胸がいっぱいになったり強く心を揺さぶられたり。あ、いいなとか、面白いなといった読書体験とは違う次元の、心の底に深く深く響く感動を与えてくれた作品です。

　11の話を収めた連作短編集。
　主人公の女性は、末期のエイズ患者をホームケアする仕事に就いています。あと何ヶ月生きられるのか、死を宣告されたに等しい患者と接する日々。彼らと言葉を交わすなかで、彼らの肉体的、精神的な苦痛に触れ、それを少しでもやわらげようとする「私」。

　余計な虚飾を一切省き、主人公の「私」と彼ら重症の患者との心の交流を淡々と綴っていく文章。しかしそこに、深い祈りの感情が満ちていて、それがまっすぐに読み手に伝わり、心に訴えかけるところ。その表現力、描写力が本当に素晴らしかった。

　この世の中のいろんなものを愛おしそうに見つめている彼女。「君、僕がいなくなったら寂しい？」と問う彼。家族との素敵な思い出を語る彼女。残された生の時間はほんのわずかだと知っている彼らの言葉に耳を傾けているうちに、どうしようもなく切ない思いがこみ上げてきて堪らなくなりました。

　今年、これまで読んできた小説のベスト・オブ・ベスト。
　深く、強く胸に刻まれた小説でした。

この物語を読んで、人との距離の近さに驚いた。

ホームケア・ワーカーとエイズ患者。
この物語の登場人物たちは、「看護人と病人」という安易な図式ではくくれない。
一緒にいて、話をして、ごはんを食べて、体に触れる。
家族でも恋人でもない関係なのに、この距離感はじつに不思議だ。

レベッカの作品は、その「距離」の描写がばつぐんに上手い。
近かったり遠かったり、その距離はさまざまだ。
主人公も他の人々も、常にそれを意識して動いている。

現代は、人との距離感が昔より少し遠くなっている気がする。
インターネットやケータイ、便利な道具は増えて人とコミュニケーションする機会は増えたように感じるが、さて、体や心はどうだろうか。

おすすめは「汗の贈り物」（ごはんがおいしそう）、「動きの贈り物」（最後がいい）。
人との距離について、しみじみと考えさせてくれる良作。
