沈着冷静。文学の知識は皆無、哲学の知識も皆無。毒物に通暁し、古今の犯罪を知悉し、ヴァイオリンをたくみに奏する特異な人物シャーロック・ホームズ。

世界で最も有名な名探偵ホームズが初めて登場した記念碑的作品。ホームズ物の中でそれほど際立った作品という訳ではありませんが、ホームズとワトスンが初めて登場し、怪異に満ちた事件を解決する最初の事件ですから、まずは押さえておきたい作品です。

深夜のロンドンで起きた殺人事件にまきこまれていく２人。空家の中年男の死体は何者か？壁には赤で「RACHE」という文字が・・・「毒殺です」ホームズはそっけなく言い放つ。

知人の紹介で知り合った奇妙な男シャーロック･ホームズと、ベーカー街221Ｂの下宿で共同生活を営む事になった戦地帰りの軍医ワトスン。
しかし、いざ共同生活をはじめてみるや、この謎の同居人の思い掛けない言動と、多彩かつ大きく偏った知識、そして時折見せる彼独特の不思議な能力に、何も知らないワトスンはただ驚かされるばかりだった。
そんな奇妙な共同生活を送る中で数週間が過ぎた頃、ロンドン警視庁のグレグスンからロウリストン･ガーデンの空家で男の死体が発見されたことを報せる一通の手紙が届く。ホームズに促されて現場へと同行したワトスンは、恐ろしい形相で息絶えた傷ひとつない死体と、壁に残された不気味な“RACHE”の血文字を目の当たりにすることに―

ホームズの第１作目「Ａ　Ｓｔｕｄｙ　in　Ｓｃａｒｌｅｔ」の全訳。
「緋色の研究」は発表した当時のイギリスでは全く無視され
ドイルは２年後にアメリカで発表した「４つの署名」で花開きます。
「緋色の研究」を書いてから２年の歳月が過ぎたせいでしょうか、
「緋色の研究」には後にでる作品との矛盾が多く指摘されています。

詳しくは書きませんが有名なドイルの錯覚としては、
ワトスンの傷やホームズの文学や天文学の知識です。
ＮＨＫで放映されたホームズシリーズにこの作品が入っていないのは、
他の作品との整合性を考えての事だったのではないでしょうか。
他の作品にもドイルの錯覚は多く出てきますが、
ここまで決定的に違う記述は誰しも首をかしげます。

しかしその錯覚を探し出すのも大いに楽しめる作品なんですね。
まずはこの作品を見て後に語られる登場人物の背景の違いを探して下さい。
