表題作は、確かによくできたラブ・ストーリーだが（「ラブ」も「ストーリー」も、ブコウスキーの前では違った意味＝より純粋な意味を持つのだが）、様々な職業体験やギャンブルなどについての話など、小説というよりもエッセイに近い作品も多く収録されている。
だが、だからといってつまらないのではなく、ジャンルを超越したところで「書く」ことへ誠実な結果だと思う。だいたい、エッセイ的なものが小説として通用するのは一級の作家だけであり、その点ではまさにブコウスキーは自らの天才を証明したことになるだろう。
ちなみにブコウスキーを「自分に似ている」と語った北野武は、ちょっと自分を買いかぶり過ぎではないか…。

100％フィクションだが、どこにも嘘がない。
それがブコウスキーだ。
この一冊は特にそれがでている。
読んでいて腹にズンズンくる！
読んだ後の爽快感と脱力感はたまらない。

小説という形態の「商品」として世間に流通する限り、それはお金を払ってもらうだけの「フィクションとしてのデキの良さ」が要求される。冷静になれば当たり前の話だ。そこにどんな深遠な思想や人生の真実や優れた洞察があっても、フィクションの完成度が稚拙ならば、他人には受け入れられない。”だったら思想書や評論やエッセイでやれば？”と言われるのがオチだ。しかし、ブコウスキーのこの短編集は違う。表題作「町でいちばんの美女」の完成度以外は、通常の小説として受けれる出版社はまずないだろう。ただ、それは凡百の作家の場合は、だ。ブコウスキーの抱えたシリアスさとリアリティは、完成度など度外視しても、十分な衝撃を持つ。時にどん底のつぶやきのように、時に激烈な怒りのように、時に絶望の号泣のように。ブコウスキーの言葉は、我々に嘘くささゼロの『リアル』を叩きつける。
