子供の頃から本が大好きでさまざまな本を読んできたが、無人島に1冊持っていけ、といわれたら迷わずこの本を選びます。
初めは正直文体が古めかしく、読みにくい部分もあるのだけど、なんでも読んでいくうちに堀口氏の日本語の美しさに虜になってしまいます。

大きな’人間の生き方’のテーマの中に、いくつも感銘をうけ、暗唱できてしまう文章があって、単に飛行士としての体験談では終っていません。
決して短編ではないのですが、途中のどの章から入っても読んでいけるので、10分、15分の移動の時も持ち歩いています。本当に私にとって人生の1冊！といえる本です。

「経験は僕らに教えてくれる、愛するということは、お互いに顔を見あうことではなくて、一緒に同じ方向を見ることだと」。

フランス文学の代表的な名著のひとつ。最初に私が本書を読んだのはもう20年以上前のことだ。しかし、本物は時代を経ても色あせない。飛んで、戦って、愛して、生きたサンテグジュペリの魂が、本書を開くたびにまた新しい勇気をくれる。「救いは一歩踏み出すことだ。さてもう一歩。そしてこの同じ一歩を繰り返すのだ」。そして、ああ、そうだった、まだ何かできることはあるかな、と思う。

気の利いた言葉をくれる書物は巷に溢れている。しかし、「ぼくは、死を軽んじることを大したことだとは思わない」などと断言する知識人が現代に何人いるだろう。本書と、ヤワな自己啓発本や机上理論だけの哲学書の違いは、実はかなりはっきりしている。

「人間と、そのさまざまな欲求を理解するためには、人間を、そのもつ本質的なものによって知るためには、諸君の本然の明らかな相違を、お互いに対立させあってはいけない」。サンテグジュペリの著作は若いころにいろいろ読んだが、一冊となるとやはりこの本に行き着く。訳は確かにもう古いかもしれない。ただ、だからといって本書の価値が失われているわけではない。

　高校の時、倫理という科目を担当していた先生が「サン=テグジュペリの本は読んだかい。『星の王子さま』じゃなくて『人間の土地』を読まなくちゃ」とおっしゃっていた。その先生を尊敬していた私は、早速本書を手にしてみた。

　読めば読むほどに、心に沁みこむ言葉で綴られている。著者が郵便飛行機の操縦士として経験したさまざまなエピソードをもとに、この地球という土地に生きる人間について思いを巡らせたすばらしい本だ。

　著者は目覚めた人だ。人の言動、心の動き、身の回りの道具や物事、人間を取り巻く自然環境などから、神秘の言葉を聞き取る。彼は物事に集中している、だから見えるのだ。彼は真摯に運命に向き合う、だから聞こえるのだ。彼は人と生活を愛している、だから識ることができるのだ。

　著者は、稀有な洞察力をもって世界を照射しそれを言葉に変換した。本書に触れることは、そうした著者の視線を自己のものにする一歩になるだろう。
