18歳のサガンが書いた青春小説。ジーン・セバーク主演で素晴らしい映画にもなった。17歳の少女セシルはファザコンで、やもめのハンサムな父を愛しているが、父には、聡明で魅力あふれる42歳の恋人アンヌが現れる。太陽がきらめく南仏の海岸で、セシルは、自分のボーイフレンドを巻き込みながら、父をアンヌから奪い返そうと戦いを挑む。青春のまぶしさ、残酷さ、切なさが交錯する、シャープでニュアンスにみちた美しい文体。河野万里子氏の新訳は、とても読みやすい。海岸ではじめて水着姿になるアンヌを観察するセシルの、少女特有の複雑な視線を、旧訳と比べてみよう。「アンヌは海辺ガウンをつけていた。彼女は、私たちの観察的な視線の前で、平然とそれを脱いで、横たわった。細い胴、完全な脚、彼女にはほんの少しの衰えしかなかった。・・・私は眉毛を上げて、思わず父への賛意の眼差しを向けた。非常に驚いたことには、父は同意の眼差しを返さずに、眼をつぶった」(朝吹登水子訳)。「アンヌは水着用のガウンを着ている。わたしたちがじっと見ている前で、彼女はそれを静かに脱ぐと、そのまま横たわった。細いウェスト、申し分ない脚。ほんのわずかな衰えしかない体だ。・・・私は思わずまゆを上げて、父に称賛のまなざしを送った。ところが驚いたことに、父はそれに応じるどころか、目をつぶってしまったのだ。」(本訳p35)
