モンゴメリ,ルーシー・モード
1874‐1942。カナダ、プリンス・エドワード島生れ。1歳9カ月で母と死別、祖父母に育てられ教師になったが、30歳で書き始めた『赤毛のアン』のシリーズが熱狂的な人気を呼んだ。美しい島の自然を背景に、10冊のアン・シリーズのほか、より自伝的なエミリーのシリーズなどの小説、詩集、日記を残し、国内外の多数の読者の心を捉えた

1893‐1968。山梨県生れ。東洋英和女学院高等科卒。モンゴメリの作品などの翻訳が高く評価されている。子どもニュース番組の「ラジオのおばさん」としても親しまれた(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

孤児のアンが、マシューとマリラとともに成長するどたばた喜劇。
カナダの自然の風景、個性ある登場人物、心温まる物語。
少女が、自立心を持って、生きていこうという積極的な姿勢が心強い。

あしながおじさん、少女バレアナ（ポリアンナ）、小公女などとともに、少女文学の最高傑作だと思われます。
その中で、子供の成長に伴って、親も成長していくことが分かるお話です。

ps.
原文はＷＥＢにあがっています。ダウンロードして英語で読むことができます。
また、講談社から文庫でも英文が出ています。
ただし、赤毛のアンの１冊目の後半は、絶版になっているので、復刊ドットCOMで再販を要請中です。

翻訳の善し悪しは、読み比べたことがないのでわかりません。
文化の変換は、時代によって違う可能性があるので、ある期間が過ぎたら翻訳し直すことも意味があると思われます。

原文の朗読も、WEBにあがっています。
URLは、講談社の赤毛のアンの原文の文庫のReviewに書いておきました。
原文を見ながら朗読をipodで聞いています。

今年は『赤毛のアン』が世に出てちょうど100周年にあたるそうです。
私のような村岡・アンのファンには、この節目の年に新装版が出たことは大変喜ばしい出来事です。
長らく謎とされていた、村岡訳に省略されていた箇所････マシュウが亡くなった晩のアンとマリラの会話がこの新装版には補てんされています。それも孫の村岡美枝さんによって。
村岡訳の特徴は、会話文の古めかしくも品のある台詞回しにあります。この部分がオリジナル訳と比べて違和感のないようにかなり注意を払って訳されています。なのですが、やはりオリジナルのアンとほんのちょっと違うな、という気がしてしまいました。村岡版が出てからもすでに56年がたっているのですから、しかたないかもしれません。
すでに持っているアンがセピア色になりつつあるので、この際改めて新装版を買ってみました。文字が大きくなってて読みやすいです。

赤毛のアン、生誕１００年ということで、ふたたび注目されているアンシリーズ。私は旧版を読み返しました。つらい子供時代を空想で乗り切ってきたアン。この風変わりな少女を優しく見守り育てていくマシュウとマリラ。昔読んだときよりも、より感動を覚えました。村岡訳は少々古めかしいですが、アンの時代背景とあっていて、私は好きです。アンブックスシリーズも一気に読破しました。さらに、実写版DVD、アニメ版DVDまで完全制覇。アニメ版は原作を忠実に映像化しており、こちらもぜひ押さえておきたい名作です。
