言わずと知れた名作「赤毛のアン」の続編です。赤毛のアンが１巻ならばこれは２巻です。 相変わらずＰ.Ｅ.島の美しい風景がアンらしい、モンゴメリーらしい表現で語られています。 様々な環境の変化がこの１冊から始まります。 １度シリーズを揃えたら、一生ものです。

赤毛でやせっぽちでそばかすの女の子は、いつのまにかほっそりした清楚な雰囲気の美人に変身します。
「どこにでもいる普通の･･」という設定だった主人公が、いつのまにか超人に変化していくのと似て苦笑を近時得ません。
（いま私の脳裏に浮かんでいるのは「BANANA FISH｣｡初巻と終巻で主人公の顔が違いすぎ。）

親友の恋愛に興味を持ちながらも超然としている様子、好きでない相手から好意を寄せられての困惑、好きな相手とはうまくいきそうな雰囲気はあるものの、特にどうという進展もなく。
なるほど、これはビクトリア朝の少女のための「少女漫画」なのですね。

悪人の出てこない設定、「そしてみんな幸福に暮らしました」的な終わり方も、少女漫画と思えば責めるにあたらない。

「作家を目指す」というややインテリ傾向はあるものの、「若草物語」のように作家として独立するために遠くへ修行に行くわけではないし。

できるだけ親の（アンは養女なので義親ですが）傍にいながらも、人並み以上の教養は備え、しかし最終的には愛する人との家庭を守るという保守的な幸福を選ぶ。
なだらかで美しいけれど、何か物足りない。

同著者の「アンの娘リラ」は、たった一世代の差ながら、親は牧歌的な世界を、娘は第一次世界大戦による価値観の激動を体験します。

読み比べると面白いです。

4.0 out of 5 stars デイビーの可愛さに星を上げたい, 2007/12/14
アンを引き取るまでは子どもなんて目障りでじゃまな存在だと思っていたようなマリラが、いつの間にかしぶしぶながらも、アンの他に双子まで引き取って世話するようになったところが面白い。
デイビーのいたずらや天真爛漫な質問、イキイキとしたしぐさや冒険ぶりが可愛くてたまらない。ドーラもたまに、ちょっとだけ可愛いときがある。
アンは地元小学校の先生として16歳ながらも奮闘するのですが、ポールという一人の少年だけをとりわけ可愛がるのは、あれ、どうなんだろうか。
後半に出てくる謎の女性ミス・ラベンダーも、なんだかとってつけた感がなくもない。けれどもモンゴメリの表現力に引き込まれて、あれれと思いつつも何度も読み返してしまう。やはり名作だからだろう。
