ナボコフにはいつも驚かされる。本書においては「第一部」、「第二部」の前に「はしがき」を設けることによってこの作品の作品性を強めることに成功しており、何も知らずに冒頭を読み出した私は、「はしがき」から本文が始まっているということに一瞬当惑してしまったほどだ。言葉の神様と言われるナボコフだが、同時に私は彼を構成の神様とも評価したい。

さて、本文についてであるが、やはり心理的、抽象的表現の奥深さは途轍もない。加えて事物に対する考察を並々ならぬ分量で説き、一つの事物からこんなにも話を膨らますことができるのかと驚嘆してしまう。

内容は、題名にある通り、中年男の少女への愛にまつわる話なのだが、その偏愛ぶりは異常である。愛しすぎているあまり、自分の行う背徳的行為を正当化し、むしろそういう行為を背徳的としてしまう現代社会の規範こそ誤りなのではないかという考えすら起こす。言ってみれば彼は幼稚な子供なのであるが、純粋な少年でもあり、そこに同情を覚える余地があり、また、この物語を悲劇的にしている。

第一部は中年男の少女への接近、第二部は前半、後半で分けられ、前半は彼の保守的に過ぎる少女との生活、後半は失われたことによって再確認する少女への愛とその追求、また失わせた者への正義の制裁が描かれている。

エロティックなシーンや表現はほとんどないが、むしろそういうものはかえって話を薄っぺらいものにしてしまう。あえてそれを避け、一人の人間のグロテスクな内面を描写した秀作である。

「ロリータ」といえばロリコンの言葉の由来。ロリコンネタで、ちょっと卑猥なのではと期待をしていなかったのですが、まったく違いました！ナボコフの文章はとにかくきれいなのです。モノの見方、考え方が刺激的で、痛烈な言葉で核心をついてきます。モノの「例え」も絶妙でリアル。そしてとにかく美しいのです。（そこは翻訳者が優れているため、という事も大きいですが。）本文でナボコフは、少女を愛した中年について、肯定も否定もしていません。モラルについて考える本というより、ただひたすら文章を味わって感動できる本。「はしがき」から本文末にある「ロリータについて」まで、すべて読み応えあり！あらためて小説は芸術のひとつだと実感できます。彼自身、「文学作品」とは「美的快楽」だと言ってますが、まさに美的快楽を存分に与えてくれる作品です。

言わずと知れたロリコン-ロリータコンプレックスのもととなった作品だが、この小説の中の「ロリータ」は私たちのイメージする「ロリータ」よりずっと俗悪でどぎつく、また魅力的だ。主人公を含めストーリー中にでる人々すべてが気狂いじみてて滑稽で全体を眩暈のする悪夢のような印象にしている。その読後感は物狂おしく重厚。また、主人公の語る妄想の数々、愛の対象となる少女論もとてもおもしろい。
