著者略歴 (「BOOK著者紹介情報」より)

フォークナー
1897‐1962。米国ミシシッピ州生れ。曾祖父は鉄道建設者・政治家・作家として知られた人物。第1次大戦で英国空軍に参加し、除隊後ミシシッピ大学に入学するが退学、職業を転々とする。地方紙への寄稿から小説を書きはじめ、米国を代表する作家の一人となる。’50年にノーベル文学賞を受賞した

加島 祥造
1923年東京生れ。カリフォルニア大学クレアモント大学院修了。戦後、詩誌「荒地」同人となる。信州大、横浜国大、青山学院短大教授を歴任(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

フォークナーが当初売れるために『自分が想像しうる最も恐ろしい物語』を考え出し作品として上梓したとの告白で、当時物議をかもした『ヨクナパトーファ サーガ』としては第四作目になる長編です。その後初稿の校正刷りを見て『ひどい作品』と彼自身大変な衝撃を受け、他の傑作がこの作品によって貶められることがないように丹念に書き直し、『響きと怒り』などに比べて恥かしくないものにしたと言ってます。何はともあれ34歳の時に刊行された本書によって、それまで無名作家だったフォークナーの名は一躍有名になり事実上の出世作（？）となりました。

確かに他の代表作に比べると深みと言う点においてもう1つのような感じは受けますが、フォークナー独特の空間と時間がスライドのように次々に移り変わって物語を紡いでいく面白さは、中盤以降サスペンスじみた展開によって加速していき、突如現出した対象に襲い掛かる暴力の幻影としての炎、ヨクナパトーファを?々まで静かに照らしだす黒い炎が、玉蜀黍の穂軸のすさまじい哄笑とともに全ての登場人物を乗せてジェファスン上空に吹き上がり、最後に『生命のエネルギーは、生命の原理の否定において最も高い熱度に達する』ともいいたげな、神に背を向けた謎の男ポパイの幻影だけが残る。

このサンクチュアリは特に難解ではなく、長編ですがあっという間に読めてしまいます。本書を読んだあとに同系統の『八月の光』へ行くよりも、『死の床へ横たわりて』あるいは『響きと怒り』などの代表作へ進むことをおすすめします。

　もちろんとっても読みにくい小説でした。暴力的なイメージ、というのが私がフォークナーに対して抱いていた印象です。たしかに陰惨な事件が起こるには起こるのですが、私には前半部のほうがおもしろかったように思います。
　前半の、テンプルが囚われている状況は、ほかのどんなホラー映画なんかよりもおそろしいと思いました。この小説には、あんまり善人がいません。ガウァンの行動にも唖然とするばかり、さらにポパイとテンプル。翻訳がいいのか、フォークナーがすごいのか、私はこのときのテンプルの言動に吐き気がするほどに嫌悪感をいだきました。ポパイではなく、テンプルにです。
　この小説を読んでいると、胸のあたりにものすごいむかつきを覚えるのです。私はあんまりすばやく読みすすめることができませんでした。その不快感はいったい何に由来するのか、嘘や欺瞞を正義をごった煮にしたようなこの小説のなかのいったい何に由来するのか、私にはよくわからないのです。
　それにしても読みにくかったです。

フォークナーを読むのは初めてなのだが、
正直言って読み辛かった。（それでもどうにか読了）
本書は禁酒法時代の米国南部の保守的な面と退廃的な面を見事に描写していると評価したいが、
読者によって多分好き嫌いのはっきり別れる作品だと思う。
（私はあまり好きではない）
著者が「想像しうる最も恐ろしい物語」と語っているそうだが、
７０年以上経った今日ではこれより恐ろしい小説は
いくらでも転がっていると思う。
何かフォークナーの作品を読んでみたいと思う人は、
他の作品を選んでも良いかもしれない。
