広大で厳しい中国の自然を背景として貧しい農民でありながら、一代で富を築いた男とその息子・孫の三代を中心に彼らの周りにいる女性の姿も見事に描き一族の盛衰を長い時間の中で描いた壮大なスケールの名作。男の生きた中国の貧しい小作農民時代と、その息子やアカ・革命の時代に生きた孫たち時代の、それぞれの時代の移り変わりをひしひしと感じさせる。希望に満ちたラストが印象的である。

場所は中国の超ー田舎、王(ワン)家は人の土地を借り働く貧しい農民だったが、働き者の妻を貰ったのをきっかけに運が変わる。自分の土地を持つことが出来る様になり、そこで人を雇えるぐらいにまで裕福になる。汗と努力は大地を田んぼに変える。そしてその田んぼは、その人々の希望になった。たくさんのお金を手に入れた王家だった。しかし同じように幸せも手に入る、というように簡単にはいか無かった。家族の問題､人々との関係､国の情勢、など、それらは複雑に絡み合いあっている。そして忘れてならないことは、人々は常に自然の大いなる力と隣り合わせの生活なのである。”大地”は”人間と土地”という、離れたくても離れられない密接な、大事な関係を現代の人々に時代を超えて訴えて来るようです。

パールバックは中国の農民生活を美化しすぎているとの批判もあるが、この本はそれでも読んでいると、中国の大地に根を張り脈々と生きついで来た農民たちの姿が心に浮かんでくる。この第一巻では、貧農の息子、王龍の結婚から始まり、妻の阿蘭とともにこつこつと働いて運と暮らし向きを少しずつ上昇させながら子供を産み育てていく。時代背景はおそらく清朝の末期ころだと思われる。幾度の政権交代で激動の時代の中国だが、王龍は来る日も来る日の黙々と畑を耕し、貯蓄して将来の礎を作っていく。途中恐ろしい飢饉を体験するくだりがあり、農民を襲う自然災害がどういうものであるか克明に書かれている。この巻では没落がなく、王龍がひたすらに少しずつ地位を上昇させていくので、こつこつと貯蓄するのが好きなタイプの読者はたまらなく好きかもしれない。私自身も全4巻の中で一番好きな巻。
