母を亡くし、叔母に引き取られてニューオーリンズに住んでいたジョエル少年は、会ったことのない父からの手紙を頼りに、アメリカ南部の小さな町へと移ってくる。近所に住む姉妹、アイダベルとフローラベルと友だちになり、神経質なミス・エイミイ、一風変わったランドルフ、お手伝いの黒人ズー、そして御者ジーザス・フィーヴァーとともに、朽ちかけた屋敷スカリーズ・ランディングに住みはじめるが、すべてが謎めいている・・・。

アメリカ南部の夏をモチーフにしながら、幻想的な文体で少年が大人になる一瞬の変化をとらえる好著です。そのどこか暴力的で、どこかとてつもなく孤独で、救いようのない雰囲気は、すぐれてアメリカ的だと思います。自伝的色彩が強いようですが、少年ジョエルの成長を通して、父なるものへの憧憬、そして母なるものとの訣別を描くカポーティの筆致・構成力は、処女作にしてすでに開花しています。アン・ライスやスティーヴン・キングに受継がれるゴシックホラーの源流がこの作品のように思います。

　この本の楽しむ方法は、主人公のジョエルに共感することが一番の近道だろう。おそらく誰もが一度は経験する繊細で不安定な時期と、そこから決別する瞬間までが描かれている。とりわけジョエルと赤毛のアイダベルとのやりとりは、失われた永遠の青春を思い起こさせ、美しい。

　話の随所に散りばめられた象徴的な伏線が次第に形を成してくるのだが、それらがまた静かな胸騒ぎを感じさせるようで魅力的な使われ方をしている。緻密に描かれた地図のような作品なので、文章やイメージの一つ一つを大切にして読まれると良いと思う。

　時間の流れる速さは歳を重ねるにつれて加速する一方である。自分が何処からやって来たのか、何のために生まれ出でたのか、誰もが青春時代に振り返るものだ。

　ジョエルは純粋に自分の原点を求めて旅立つ。目にするもの、体験すること全てが新鮮であり、彼にとって不安かつ衝撃的な世界である。少年の時間はゆったりと彼の前を流れて行く。観覧車に乗り、地上からゆっくり離れ昇って行く場面がとても象徴的だった。大人になればこんな感覚は、もう消えてなくなる。２度と彼は過去に引き返す暇はないだろう。

　有名な書き出しがとても印象に残る素敵な青春文学である。若き野心に溢れるカポーティの処女作であり名作です。ちなみに私は大学生の頃、暇だったんだろうな、３回は読み返しました。
