このオスカー・ワイルド童話集。他の本を買うついでに、懐かしさが湧き出て買ってみた。しかし、実際に読んでみて「あれ？」と思った。とくに、『幸福な王子』は昔読んだ印象と随分変わっていた。

子どものころ読んでいた絵本を探し出し比べてみると、なるほど、子ども向けのは王子とツバメの愛の語り合い・キスシーンがカットされている。少しネットで調べてみると、どうやら子ども向けのものには意図的に改変（カット）されてる箇所があるらしかった。

子どもの時に読んで思ったことは、「王子って勝手なやつ。ツバメは可哀想。」だった。恐らくは著者の意図する「他人への慈愛、思いやりは素晴らしい」ということはあまり私には伝わらなかった気がする。子ども向けではその描写はカットされてしまっているが、この童話は王子とツバメの愛があってこそ成立するものなのだと思う。

もし、子ども向けの改変されたものしか読んだことがない人がいたら、ぜひこの本を読んでもらいたい。ひょっとしたら、昔とはまったく違う善い方向への感想が持てるかもかしれない。私のように。

先日「幸福の王子」のドラマが始まった事もあり
ふと読み返して見た人も私だけでは無いと思いますが。。

今、読んでみると幸福の王子の後に続く
「ナイチンゲールと薔薇」この二つは共通点が
いくつかあるにも関わらず見返りを求めた者と求めなかった者。
神の手による救いの手が差し伸べられた者とそうでない者の
差を思い知らされもします。

何故ワイルドはこの二つの作品を最初の童話集に収めたのか？

同じ代償を支払う二つの作品を続けている辺り？
とても気になる所です。。
与えること、与えられることに不慣れな私たちが少しでもその場所に近づけますように。。

表題の「幸福な王子」は誰もが子供の頃に絵本か何かで読んでいると思いますが、あらためて読むとすごい、絵本では結構肝心なところが抜け落ちています。あらためて読むと泣けます。 特に技巧を凝らした語りでもないのに、ぐいぐい引き寄せられます。ストーリテラーとしてのワイルド の冴えが響き渡る一冊です。
