　環境問題の必読書にかならずといっていいほど挙げられる本だ。
　DDTやディルドリンといった化学物質の有害性がまだ軽視されていた時代、ひとりの女性が化学物質の危険性を世に問うた、環境問題の原点となる本である…。
　といった話はもはやだれもが知るところ。では、実際読んでみて、どうだったかというと…。

　他のレビュアーも書かれているとおり、同じ話がくり返されているような気になるので、飽きっぽい人にはちょっと辛いかもしれない。そういった気になる原因は、ひとつは化学物質のなじみのなさにあると思う。ベンゼン・ヘキサクロリドにアミノトリアゾールに、ヘプタクロール。こうした化学物質の名前がこれでもかというくらいに出てくる。もちろん化学物質には区別のため名がなければならないし、機械的にアルファベット3文字か長いカタカナで表わされるのもしかたのないところだ。けれども、何十年たってもそうした化学物質の名前がなかなか定着しないことが、本と読者の壁になっている気がしてならない。

　原著がアメリカで発行された当初は、これだけ大量の報告があれば、すごくセンセーショナルな本だったのだろう。けれども「『沈黙の春』が環境書の原点」という話がもはや常識のいま、この本を読む目的はもっと別なところに移っているんじゃないかと思う。

　たとえば、『沈黙の春』が出版されたときにくらべて、環境問題についての現状がどう変わったかを考える尺度の基準として読む方法がある。国家や大企業が「環境か経済か」というスタンスにどう向きあっているか。少なくともアメリカ政府が京都議定書を無視したり戦争をくり返したりしている態度は、『沈黙の春』の頃となにも変わっていないような気がしてならない。

農薬や化学肥料などが環境に与える影響を最初に警告した本であることはよく知られている。
環境系の勉強をしている人は読んでおいた方がいいものだと思う。ただ、同じ事が繰り返して書いてあるというか、似たような部分がおおく、読みにくいと感じる部分がある。
興味のない人には最後まで読むのはつらいかもしれない。しかし、警告しているだけあって内容には重みがあり、未来の地球のことを考えると恐ろしくなる。自分の体には、既にどのくらいの有害物質が蓄積されており、どのくらいたまると影響が出るのか不安に感じる。
近年、自分の周りで鳴く蝉の種類が減った。ツバメが減った。トンボが減った。今までは特に気にしていなかったことが、もしかして…という不安に変わる。
自分の視野を広げるためにも読んでおいて損はない一冊だと思う。

膨大な実例を挙げ、殺虫剤と農薬の負の側面をこれでもかと読者に見せつけてくれる作品。
科学的な説明と文学的ないくつかの名文によって、レイチェル・カーソン読者を頭でも感情面でも殺虫剤と農薬の過剰な使用のおろかさを納得させる事に成功している。
膨大な調査からも、作者の意気込みが感じられる。

環境問題に対し、本書が書かれた当時より研究も進み、環境問題への社会的な認知や、人々の意識もだいぶ変わったのにも関わらず、この本はそのさきがけとして、環境問題の根本を映し出している作品である。
