主人公はある日、職を失い、家族の信頼を失う。
働くべく前の職場に行っても追い返され、努力しても新しい職にもつけない。
やがて家族の中で「こいつはうちに居ない」ことにされる。
部屋から出ることも、家族の輪に入ることもできない。
うっかり人前にでてしまうと、とんでもないことをしたかのように言われる。
あげく、こんななら出て行くのが当然のように扱われ見殺しにされる。
死ぬ前に出て行けばよかったのか、出て行けば何とかなったのか。
これはそう言う話。
「毒虫になった」てのはきっかけでそれは「失業した」「病気になった」「ぼけた」など言い換えることができる。何かがきっかけで家族が家族でなくなるとどういうことになるか。
毒虫から立ち直るのにこの家族は何もしない。毒虫として扱うだけ。
結果、主人公は死に家族はすっきりとふたたび「きれいな家族」として暮らして行く。

いや、恐ろしい話だけど「毒虫になる」を文字通りとらなければ現実にありそうなホラー。

カフカは、この作品が出版される際に、「表紙に毒虫の絵は描かないでくれ」と注文したという。

「毒虫」は、あくまで「疎外される者」の象徴である。
いつの時代、どの場所にも「毒虫」はいる。

社会的に疎外される者と、彼らを身内に抱える家族。
「家族だから」と庇護する気持ちと「邪魔だ」と疎んじる気持ちは、矛盾しているように見えるけど、きっとどちらも本心なのだろうと思う。

最後、グレーゴルがいなくなった後、リセットされたかのように晴れ晴れとした気持ちで、娘の将来に期待をよせるザムザ一家。
その未来には、「毒虫」の存在は欠片も残っていない。

この話は説明はなく、オチもない。
しかしだからこそ、その丸投げっぷりと残酷さは、ひどく現実的に思えてならない。

朝起きるとザムザ君が虫になってるという、言わずと知れたカフカの代表作。さまざまな解釈があると思いますが、僕は他の作品同様テーマは『孤独』や『疎外』だと思います。ある心境に達するともはや人間は虫になってしまうといったかんじでしょうか。短いですがとても深い内容で、何度読んでも飽きません。しかし、いくらなんでもザムザは可哀想です。虫になったことではありません。一家を支えていたザムザが邪魔者となり慕っていた妹にも見捨てられ、孤独の内に死に、一家は再出発の希望を抱く。ある種の効力を発揮していた者も、不要になると捨てられてしまう、なんだかホッカイロみたいな扱いです。しかも僕の大好きなカフカ特有の無駄な長台詞や比喩、シュールな展開(出だしは死ぬほどシュールですが)がほとんど無いので、☆4つにしました。
