裁判が有名であるだけに、大変猥褻な内容だととられがちですが、とても文学
的に描写がなされ、いやらしい感じはまったくありません。また、現代の感覚
からいえば、そうたいしたものではないでしょう。
そもそもこの作品には、ロレンスの社会観などの考えが十分すぎるほどに詰め
こまれているのであって、性描写が目的の作品ではありません。男女関係や、

社会的階級差などについて深く考えさせられます。

　有名な伊藤整訳である。

　伊藤整は、エゴイズムの克服ということをその文学者としての課題のひとつに挙げた人物であり、それを実現するひとつの道として、ロレンスの文学思想につよく関心を抱いていたことはよく知られている。
　伊藤整に関心のある読者は読むべきである。

　そして、同時に、わたくしは訳者によるチャタレイ裁判の記録である「裁判」（上下）を強く推したい。佐藤優「国家の罠」へ繋がる日本の法曹界の問題点についての洞察が深まることと思う。

　大学の授業でロレンスの別の作品が出てきたのがきっかけで、この本も読んでみました。
　スキャンダラスな逸話にちょっとびくびくしていたのですが、描写自体は今日まったく問題にならない程度のものでした。もちろん、肉体も愛と理解のためには重要な要素である、という意味で、性描写がけっこう出てきますが。

　おどろいたのは、よく言われてきた「夫がだめになったので身分の低い肉体派の森番と云々」というのがまったく間違いだったこと。
　森番メラーズは生まれた階級は低いが、才能と努力と幸運な出会いによって教養を身につけた紳士で、体格はそれほど立派じゃない上に大病の後遺症でむしろ病弱。軍隊から帰ってみれば、同じ階級の家族や隣人とは話す言葉も関心事も価値観や倫理観も違ってまるで話が通じない。それで森番という孤独な仕事を選んだのでした。
　コニーも、負傷した夫は代償行為か非情な金儲けに邁進するようになり、上流階級の知人たちの無理解から、孤独に苦しんでいた。

　読後感はむしろ、孤独なふたつの魂が惹かれあった、美しい恋愛小説でした。
