トルストイを読むなら「戦争と平和」より先ずこちらから読んだほうがいいと思います。こちらのほうがスケールは小さくて、扱うテーマが主に3つのロシア上流家庭の人間模様なのですが、その分心理面などの動きも描ききれていて、私たちが普段何気なく感じていることにきちんと答えを見出してくれます。また心理面だけでなくすべての描写がすばらしく、まるでそこに自分も一緒にいるかのような錯覚になります。そのため読後に昔あった懐かしい思い出のように心に残るのです。分量は大目なのですが、主に対照的な2つの家庭の話が交互にでるので飽きないで読めると思います。最後に主人公が生きるという事に何か確固たる意味をもとめて、さまざまな哲学書を読み漁ったりしながら最後に勝ち取った境地は文学史上もっともうまくいった奇跡的な仕事です。

トルストイが描くというので完全に固まって読み始めましたが、「戦争と平和」
よりはずっと解りやすく面白い。トルストイがこんなにも女性の感情を
緻密に描ける才能があったのかと感嘆してしまった作品。
美貌のアンナが美貌の資産家の青年と不倫の恋に落ちてしまう物語。
聡明な上流社会のアンナが心から好きになれない男性と結婚してしまってから
虚ろな日々を送るに突然現れた美貌の青年。恋におちたら一貫の終わり
だと分かりながら抑えきれない気持ちをその青年に託してしまう。
周囲の心無い嘲笑や噂が人間の心が如何に醜く、残酷で、移ろいやすいか思い知らされる。
アンナに突きつけられる全ての現実はおぞましく、信じられるのは
愛情以外何もない。それを重荷に感じる男。不幸の道へまっしぐらのアンナ
と対照的なのがキティでそれほど大恋愛でもなかった誠実な男性と平凡
で幸せな日々を見出す本当の幸せ。
愛情に飢えていたアンナを「汚い女」と呼ぶにはあまりにも残酷すぎる。
恋という不条理で無常なものにとらわれてしまった悲劇である。

役人カレーニン―その妻アンナ―ヴロンスキー伯爵、ヴロンスキー―令嬢キチイ―地主リョーヴィン、二つの三角関係を中心に、アンナの兄オブロンスキー、キチイの姉ドリイの夫婦や、リョーヴィンの兄ニコライ、コズヌイシェフなどが登場して語られていく壮大な叙事詩。社交界から農村まで、重層的な当時のロシアの生活の様子を余すところなく描写していきます。

神、愛、ロシアの政治、戦争、共産主義など様々なテーマが複雑に入り組んでいて、一言では説明できない小説ですが、根底にあるのは、如何に良く生きるか、何で生きるのか、善とは何か、という大きな問題に真っ向から取り組んで行く著者の真摯な姿勢ではないでしょうか。その意味で、生活に根ざしていない幸福が破綻するアンナとヴロンスキーのカップルと、田舎で地道に生活して幸福なキチイとリョーヴィンのカップルの対比が際立ちます。

箴言のような、人の心の深みに届く言葉が満遍なく散りばめられていて、読みながらいろいろなことを考えさせられます。難しく読むのも可能ですし、ただ言葉の美しさや登場人物の感情に身を浸して読み流すも良し、読む人の意識の状態によって、様々に姿を変え、でも必ず何かを与えてくれる、そんな凄い小説です。
