以前から題名が気になっていたにも関わらずに読まずにいたのだが、先日やっと読むに至った。想像していたのとは違って、静かな気持ちになる本だった。月が語ってくれる物語は、世界各国で月が見た光景である。月は毎晩、色々な場所をちょっとずつ見ているのだ。そして時の流れを遡って語られる物語もある。そうしたある時代、ある場所での物語の一つ一つは、美しく、そして時には悲しげでもある。

タイトルは知っていたのですが内容に関しては全く知識のないまま手に取ってみました。
結論。すてきです。月がお話をしてくれるという設定からしてワクワクします。何しろ月です。見えないものはほとんどありません。世界中の様々な場所で月が見た三十三夜ぶんの小さな物語、そのどれもが、目の前にはっきりと光景が浮かぶように語られています。通しで読むと、世界中をめぐって旅をしてきたような気持ちにさせられてしまいます。そしていつの間にか心の中には三十三枚の絵ができあがっているという寸法です。そう、これは「絵のない」ではなく、「絵を心に映す」絵本なのです。
「絵本」と銘打ってはいますが大人でも十分楽しめる名作だと思います。繰り返される人間の歴史や日常のささやかなシーンを見事に切り取り輝かせたアンデルセンは童話だけの人じゃない！寝る前にランダムに選んだ一夜を読んでから灯りを消すと、いい気分で眠れそうです。カーテンを開けて月を見上げるのもいいかもしれませんね。

１、２ページの描写で一枚の月明かりに照らされた絵が浮かびあがる。無邪気な子供の愛らしい話や心温まる話もあれば、不幸にも死んでいく人を嘆く話もあり。それが三十三夜の小さな風景としてまとめられています。ヨーロッパ各地の都市や村から、インドや過去のポンペイに遡って月は静かに語っている。それはごく普通の人生を生きている人たちの一夜の情景。
読んでいると、そのシーンがイメージとして浮かび上がってくる。それがあたかも絵本の一ページのようで、想像力を養うのにちょうどいい。映しだされるのはほんの一瞬。語る月の感情表現は、その光でキスするのみ。何を考えさせられるわけでもないけど、なぜかほっとする、そんな本だった。
