空き時間にさっと読めるので、私はよく短編集を読みます。新潮文庫の海外短編集もいくつか読みましたが、その中でこれは一番好きな一冊です。

どの作品も日常のふとしたことを描いています。劇的なことは何も起きない毎日の延長線上で新しい視点に目覚める、自分の人生はなんだったのかと考える、そんな心の動きが細かい情景描写と共に読み取れ、読了後に余韻を残します。

１５編ある中で、お薦めは代表作の「園遊会」と「若い娘」。どちらも思春期の少女の心理をよく描いていると思います。特に「若い娘」は、自意識過剰で情緒不安定だった思春期の頃を思い出しました。そういう意味で、女性向の一冊かもしれません。

邦訳も自然で、読みやすい文章だと思います。
