5.0 out of 5 stars 精神的すぎる恋愛の一つの結果を描いた作品, 2004/4/14
題名からいかつい内容を想像している人が多そうだが、文体・人物
関係・ストーリー展開どれをとっても単純で馴染み易い。
しかも、ページ数も少なく本も薄い。

だが、初めて読んだ時の鮮烈な衝撃はすごいものだった。
とにかく繊細で美しい文章、フランス田園の生き生きとした写実的
描写、登場人物達の沈思・懊悩・壊れそうな関係と感動的な会話。
こういう繊細で内省的な緊張感を伴った恋愛表現は、オープンな
恋愛表現より日本人の伝統的な嗜好にも合う。

私は男だから、神性を感じさせる寂しそうな従姉のアリサに精神的
すぎる憧れを抱くジェロームの気持ちはよく分かるのだが、それ
以上にアリサの怖れ・不安と、それに続く破滅的行動（自己犠牲的
だが、少し違う）に共感するものがあった。
アリサを自己犠牲とか信仰に殉じたと呼ぶのに抵抗がある。
むしろ信仰は後付けのアリサなりの理屈に近い。アリサは自分に
そう言い聞かせ実践していかなければ、自分を納得させられ
なかったのだ。信仰よりも、自分の幸せに向かって突き進めない
気質の方が直接の原因だろう。
後半の「アリサの日記」の必死で痛々しい神への言葉がつらい。

「狭き門」を愛読書の最上位におく人はけっこういるのだが、私も
含めて思春期に読んだ人にそういう傾向が見られる。恋愛や社会
生活を実感できないでいる時期の方が共鳴しやすいということかも
しれない（ジッド自身、そういう気がある作家だ）。

4.0 out of 5 stars 縄も鞭も蝋燭も、そして濡れ場さえないＳＭ小説, 2007/10/27
最初に断っておくが「アリサが読まれる事拒んだ日記の部分」をどう「読む」かがこの小説のポイントであり、
自由に裏話を想像する事ができる、即ち読者自身の人生観がジャッジされる事に気をつけるべきである（下文参照）。

十代で読んだ時は全く違う印象があったのだが、今は良質のＳＭ小説として本書を人生の半ばを過ぎた人に薦める。
淫蕩な母を持った事がトラウマになっているアリサは形而上の美しさを追求する少女であった。
知識と教養はあるが（若さ故か？）社会常識と他人の気持ちを読む力のないジェロームはそんなアリサの「聖」なる部分を崇拝し敬愛する事で彼女が地上に降りる事を許さない。
俗な妹とジェロームを結婚させる事で彼に「生」を与えて自身も気楽に生きたかった（？）アリサを、無自覚なるがゆえにサディスティックな愛が緊縛する。
ジェロームの理想であろうとせんがために「狭き門」への険しい道程に歩まざるを得なくなり、次第にその苦行に法悦を感じ遂には死に至るアリサ。
自分が追い込んでいた事を死んだ彼女の日記で悟ったはずなのに、反省よりは「瓶詰め」になったアリサを愛でるかの様なジェローム。
おんどりゃ難しい事言うとるが、正味のとこ只の変態ちゃうんか？と横山やすし師匠よろしく突っ込みを入れたくなる事必至である（笑）。
愚直な失敗の多い生き方をしている人は、突っ込みを入れる事で不思議な癒しを感じるであろう。

また、作者自身の結婚生活についての知識を事前に入れておくと２倍楽む事ができる。

アリサの理想とする愛の形とは？
確かに彼女はジェロームを愛したのであろう。
しかし、その愛の形はジェロームにとって苦悩を深めるだけだった。
何かを超越したようなアリサの愛は、我々読者に理解できる類のものだろうか。
そんなアリサに終始混乱させられ、苦しめられるジェローム。

終盤、アリサの日記に記された以下の言葉が強く印象に残った。

「《自ら進んで引かれるままになっているときは、人は束縛を感じません。
　しかし、それにあらがい、遠ざかろうとするとき、はじめて激しい苦しみを感じます》
　この言葉は、いかにも直截にわたしの胸をついたので……」

「主よ……」と言い続ける終盤の日記の中、このくだりでは神をさておき、
アリサの素直な心情が見えたようで、私にとって何となく救いとなった気がする。
