　ライラの世界とは別のこちら側の世界の住人ウィル，精神的に危うい母親を抱え孤独と貧困にさいなまれながら怪しい男たちの襲撃を受け１２歳の少年は消息不明の父を捜す旅にでる。別世界へ開いた窓を見つけそこでダストの橋を渡ったライラに出会う。
　しかしその世界には恐るべき魔物スペクターが。

　手に汗握る冒険。気球乗りスコースビートと魔女セラフィナの活躍，ウィルの父親の謎・・・物語は否が応でもクライマックスに近づく。
　羅針盤と別世界への窓を切り開く短剣。
この二つの持ち手が今後どのように人類の歴史に関わるのか。天使，魔女，あらゆる別世界の生き物が参戦する造物主への反逆，最終戦争の結末は？！

The Second book of the His Dark Materials is the most thrilling one of the three. the story moves on to a boy Will, and his knife that can cut through worlds. As I read this I became totally absorbed in the world of Pullman`s. Although it is a story hard to catch at first, because of the unique setting, it is worth being patient untill you get at it. This series is definitely a masterpiece so don`t waste your time reading this review and try this book out!!!!

・ライラ・・・リーダシップが薄れ元気がありません。

・ウィル・・・神秘の短剣の守り手。本書の主役。突然登場されてもね。
　ウィルが指を落として魔女の「血で壁を作れ」で血が止まって欲しかった。
　父親に治療させたかったのでしょうが出血したまま時間がたちすぎ。

・アスリエル卿・・・出てきません。

・コールター夫人・・・無敵なの？

・イオレク・バーニソン・・・出てきません。

・真理計・・・ライラがウィルのお父さんを探すため意外にには使わないと誓ってからは使用しない。
　チョット無理がありますね。
　真理計を盗まれたライラが盗んだ相手の言葉を素直にきいて、神秘の短剣をとりに行くくだりでは違和感を感じた。

・神秘の短剣・・・別世界の窓を開けられる。神秘性が感じられない。
前巻でアスリエル卿が苦労した別世界への道が簡単に明けられては面白くない。

・スペクター・・・大人を襲い子供には無害。飛べない。
　なんとこのスペクターがコールター夫人の部下のごとく命令に従う。
さらに夫人はスペクターに空を飛ぶことを思い出させる。
安易に何でもありは嫌いです。

『琥珀の望遠鏡』でこの巻の持つ意味がわかるのでしょうか？
『黄金の羅針盤』に比べだいぶ本書は落ちるように思います。
