フルトヴェングラー
1886‐1954。ドイツの指揮者・作曲家。1922年にニキシュの後を継いでライプツィヒ・ゲヴァントハウス管弦楽団とベルリン・フィルの指揮者となった。以来、ドイツ楽壇に君臨する存在として、主に古典派からロマン派にかけてのドイツ音楽を指揮し、深い精神性をたたえた名演奏を残した。20世紀最大の巨匠として神格化される存在

芳賀 檀
1903‐1991。東京生れ。東京帝大独文科を経てドイツに留学。帰国後、三高教授となり、日本浪曼派、四季同人として活躍(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　この新潮社文庫の「音と言葉」は抄訳であり、多くの評論が割愛されている。文庫本なので持ち歩きには便利であるが、誤訳もあるとのこと。フルトヴェングラーのこの世紀の著作をきちんと読みたければ、白水社版の「音と言葉」（芦津丈夫　訳）を読んだ方が良い。

フルトヴェングラーの音楽に対する思想を知る上で参考になる本です。抄訳ですが、エッセンスを絞って書かれていると思います。
フルトヴェングラーは自身はむしろ作曲家として大成することを望んでおり、指揮は余技にすぎないと考えていた様ですが、音楽に対する思想を語っています。
その音楽の精神性を知る上で参考になる本だと思います。
このような考えがあっての、あの指揮振りがあるのだと思うとより演奏が楽しめると思います。

訳が古い（1957年）ので少し読みにくいが、去年文字を大きくした改版になったことと漢字のルビが多いことで大分改善している。収録されている講演・論考の表題は「すべて偉大なものは単純である」「バッハ」「ベートーベンの音楽」「ベートーベンと私たち」「『フィデリオ』の序曲」「ロマン派について」「ブラームスと今日の危機」「ワグナーの場合」「アントン・ブルックナーについて」「ヒンデミットの場合」「作品解釈の問題」「ヴィーン・フィルハーモニーについて」「音と言葉」である。これらの表題を見ただけで買ってしまったが、正解だった。音楽に関しては素人である私でも、著者の言う芸術の精神みたいなものはよく分かった。クラシックの道案内にも使える。
