スイス、ダヴォスの山上のベルクホーフ国際結核療養所に、３週間の予定でいとこのヨーアヒム・チームセンを見舞った見習い造船技師ハンス・カストルプは、そのまま自ら入院患者となり、療養所の生活を始める……。

トーマス・マンは、同様の療養所に妻を見舞い、肺に湿潤個所があると医者に療養を勧められたが、断わって下山したときの経験に着想を得て、本書を書いたようです。1912年の着想から、24年の出版まで12年かかっており、物語のトーンが読み進むにしたがって少しずつ変わっていくのが、興味深いところです。最初は、ハンス・カストルプが山の生活に魅せられ、引き込まれていく部分、そしてショーシャ夫人との邂逅、次にブルジョア資本主義の代弁者であるゼテムブリーニとそれを真っ向から否定するナフタ二人のインテリゲンチャによる激しい思想のぶつかり合い、そして、最後に実業家の大人物ペーペルコルンの登場です。

こうした人物たちとの関係を通して、主人公ハンスは、自らの立ち位置を確認していきます。自分は何ものなのか、どう生きるべきなのか、サナトリウムにおいて、ある意味モラトリアムを享受しながら、少しずつ自己を形成していく過程の描写が素晴らしいです。だんだんと自分の生に責任を持っていくハンスの成長ぶりに注目するいっぽう、やはり目を離せないのは、二十世紀初頭のヨーロッパ社会情勢の影響でしょう。執筆中の第一次世界大戦、その後のファシズムの抬頭、そうした事態に対するマンの葛藤がゼテムブリーニとナフタの激しい議論の中に見え隠れします。個人的には地に足をつけて生活することが大事だ、というメッセージを受け取りました。人間社会はどうあるべきか、真剣な思索をめぐらしながら、この長大な小説がどこか瓢軽さを失っていないのは、マンの生命に対する愛情ゆえだと思います。

　主人公のハンス・カストルプは長いサナトリウム生活の中で、さまざまな人物に出会い、その異質な環境が作りあげた病人達の人間模様に驚く。対立する思想を議論する人達の間で、主人公は自分なりの真理を発見するのだが……。

　主人公の希望に続く絶望は、現代生活に疲れた人間にもなぞらえて見ることができる。一世紀近く前に書かれた本作の主人公の選択が我々に与える衝撃は、未来においても不変であろう。

　主人公はマンも小説の中で解説しているとおり完璧な男ではない。他の登場人物のように一定の思想も持ち合わせていない。このあたりを読み手が共感できるかどうかが、物語を楽しむための境界線のような気がする。

レオ・ナフタのモデルはゲオルグ・ルカーチだということを事前に知っておけばこの本の哲学的な要素の理解は容易になるだろう。「魔の山」は近代が抱える問題、イデオロギーや主体という観点から正面から取り組んだ傑作である。それでいて、人生の機微がそこかしこに詰め込まれ、前編が青年ゆえの初々しさに彩られている。これこそ真の文学作品であると強調したい。すべての人に薦めたい一冊だ。
