シェイクスピアの作品で最も好きなのが「夏の夜の夢」。
先ず、タイトルが最高に良い。何か幻想的でハッピーで、
胸を締め付けるような爽やかな甘美さを感じさせてくれる。
登場人物たちが妖精なので、多くの台詞が自然に幻想的になっており、
聞いているだけで、心ときめく。詩情豊かな幻想喜劇。
そして、そこから紡がれるふくよかな台詞が全く陳腐にならず、
見る者の心にすーっと優しく染み入ってくる。
読む度に、幸せな気分になる珠玉の作品だと思う。
チェスタトンもこの作品が大好きだったようだ。
花々の甘い風のなかに踊るキャラクターや台詞たちは、
何か抱きしめたくなるような懐かしさも感じさせてくれる。

福田恆存氏の訳は素晴らしく、
「待つ身の楽しさもあと四日、そうすれば新月の宵が来る。
かけてゆく月の歩みの、いかに遅いことか！」と始まると、ドキドキする。
「露をさがしに行かなければ、そうして桜草という桜草の耳たぶに、真珠の玉をかけてやらなければ」
「キューピッドの矢に射抜かれた紫の花の滴」
「おい、音楽だ。〜この大地のゆりかごを、そっとゆすってやるのだ。〜それ、雲雀の声が朝の歌を」
最後はパックが「ちょいと夏の夜のうたたねに垣間見た夢幻に過ぎないと」
「いずれパックが舞台でお礼をいたします」と言って消えていく。

「あらし」も良い。さすがシェイクスピア。
ただ、「夏の夜の夢」が、私にとっては素晴らし過ぎる。
是非ともオススメの宝石。

少し前ハリウッド映画にもなっていた『真夏の夜の夢』（ただし福田恒存氏は
夏至の前日という舞台設定、そしてイギリスの夏は過ごしやすい陽気であるこ
とを考え合わせ、「夏の」夜の夢にしている）＆シェイクスピア晩年の傑作、
『テンペスト』をおさめた文庫。
一見、異様な取り合わせにも思えるが、両作品とも、妖精が出てくるなど多少

幻想的なところが共通しているともいえよう。
妖精パックの手違いで、恋人たちがごちゃごちゃになってしまうMidsummer
Night's Dream、そして領地を追われたミラノ公プロスペローが、自分と娘
ミランダを追いやった者たちを乗せた船を難破させるところからはじまる『あ
らし』、どちらも面白く読める作品。結局、夏の夜の夢の恋人たちはあれで良

かったのだろうかとか、プロスペロー達の和解が微妙に不完全だったり、と
いうところもあるが、短くて読みやすく、基本的にはハッピーな物語である。
巻末に解題つき。但し、字がとても小さい上、ところどころブレたようになっ
ていたりして、体裁上は読みにくい。

「夏の夜の夢」ではひとりだけ、最後まで、劇が終了してからでも夢から覚めない人物がいる。つまり、ディミートリアスはハーミアを追いかけて森へ来た筈なのに、ヘレナの恋人として森を出てくるのである。彼はこの夢をみつづけたままで一生を終えるのだろう。これは幸福だろうか、不幸だろうか？　そして、私たちの中にもまた、夢を生きつづけ、一生を終える者がいるーー。
「夢」とはなんだろう？　希望、野心、憧れ、幻想ーー？　「夢」のために戦い、栄光を手にする者もいれば、「夢」ゆえに破滅する人間もいる。シェイクスピアの世界はそういう男たち、女たちのオンパレードだ。

「私たちは夢と同じ材料でできていて、私たちのささやかな一生は/眠りで仕上げられる」（あらし）。この「巨大な地球」でさえやがて消え去る、とシェイクスピアは言う。そして、それをよく承知しているにもかかわらず、私たちはこの「ささやかな一生」を突き放すこともできず、泣き、笑い、喜び、悲しむ。これが人間だ、とでもシェイクスピアは言いたいのか？
地球（グローブ）座やそこで活躍した役者たちと同様、地球も人類もいずれ消滅するだろうが、人類が消滅する前にシェイクスピアの作品が失われることはないだろう。
